Google recruiter wants me to interview for L3

I have 4 years of experience as software engineer at top hedge funds. I have designed and built backend micro services from scratch. I can do 90% of the tasks without someone telling me how to do it. I feel I am capable of performing as L4 but recruiter is saying that I can succeed better at Google if I start as L3. I don’t believe that. TC: 250-300K. Base 175K and rest is bonus. Should I refuse to interview for L3?

What’s the pay for that level?

L3 band is 150-250K. University grads and people with less than 2-3 yoe start as L3.

They won't match 300TC for L3

Google abedmrng Sep 29, 2018

They actually can.

Citadel Letitsnow! OP Sep 29, 2018

Really? If they do that will be like top 1 percentile of L3. Isn’t 300K like median L4 salary?

Microsoft Nxonshdizn Sep 29, 2018

Google is known to down level folks. Move to FB instead

Worried about bad wlb at Facebook. But will definitely interview for leverage

How is your current WLB at Citadel?

Microsoft Nxonshdizn Sep 29, 2018

It doesn’t hurt interviewing. Do best in your interviews and then start negotiating with other offers in hand.

Google feral Sep 29, 2018

Level is not negotiable if they interview you as L3. You won’t get the design interviews needed for L4-5 consideration. It’d be a waste

Citadel Letitsnow! OP Sep 29, 2018

Yeah don’t want to waste all my interview preparation and time.

Google feral Sep 29, 2018

You could kiss that base salary good bye. You wouldn’t get more than 140 base, 250 tc. Don’t do it. Tell her no and that you’re going to interview with Facebook

Citadel Letitsnow! OP Sep 29, 2018

I am not worried about base as long as TC is equivalent to my current TC. But i will say no for L3

Oracle kxldkdmd Oct 1, 2018

I'm opposite, I'd rather get high TC and low level as opposed to lower TC higher level

Honestly, you should go somewhere else or demand an L4 interview. You won't be happy at google at L3 and the recruiter is going to lie to you and tell you that you can just get promoted in a year.

Citadel Letitsnow! OP Sep 29, 2018

Who are all willing to consider me for L4 other than Facebook?

Uber

Google half_life Sep 29, 2018

Tell her the interview target is L4 or you won't do the interview. Worst case they give you an L3 offer if you performed decently well.

Citadel Letitsnow! OP Sep 29, 2018

Yes that’s what i am thinking but for that she should also agree to setup L4 loop

Facebook Itsamario Sep 29, 2018

300 TC for l3 is not possible. I asked and recruiter refused

Google dl Sep 29, 2018

I once saw it in internal sharing list

Facebook Itsamario Sep 29, 2018

Well recruiter said it’s not possible so she lied 🤥

Google 💁🏼‍♂️lol Sep 29, 2018

Most external L4 hires I've seen have at least 5 years of experience, you're in the middle -- I'd probably wait a year before considering a move to a large company

Citadel Letitsnow! OP Sep 29, 2018

That sucks. Do you really need 5 yoe to perform at L4 level? The guy who went to school with me joined google fresh out of school and just got promoted to L5 last month.

Sweetlode Sep 29, 2018

It's easier to get promoted internally than it is to be hired at any given level. If your friend is an L5 now, he'd probably come in as an L4 and be downleveled if he was interviewing at Google.

As a Google staffing manager, I'm assuming the recruiter is just trying to set you up for interview success, but clearly it wouldn't be in line with comp expectations. Just tell them you want to interview for L4, but also understand the expectations will be much higher in the process. Good luck!

Citadel Letitsnow! OP Sep 29, 2018

Thanks. Will try doing that

Google xOIU50 Sep 29, 2018

I would also do some research on the difference between L3 and L4 SWE's. This will help you to prep and hopefully convince the recruiter as well.
