Google team match

Got approved by HC (L5) - now team match starts. My prior experience is super specialized (low level, kernel, system programming etc). Never worked with any database, sql, web etc. Does it mean that I won’t be offered any distributed systems teams? And will only get to hear from teams that do what I’m specializing in?

Don't rely on recruiter, browse positions and provide recruiter with a list.

Most of Google positions outside of Bay are just generalist software engineer.

These are just general roles. I'm looking for specific team for matching

They may give you job on Chrome OS or Android or Infra. However since you're senior engineer other teams will be open to taking you but nothing is guraranteed.

If I take one of those teams - will it be easy to switch team to something less specialized later?

Yeah, I hoped trying something new. But obviously I cannot perform at sr engineer pace on teams that do some Go-backend right away. Recruiter basically told me that most likely only specialized teams will be interested in me.

How many yoe you had before google? I’m 12 mostly in system programming.

Even at L5 you would not be expected to deliver earth shattering results in your first half year. Join a team that interests you, spend a few months learning the tech and the product and the ecosystem, and then start taking off. You will get less slack if you start niche and transfer later since you won't have the noogler hat anymore.

Did your interview include any specific questions from your field ? I have similar work experience and I'd be dissappointed to have it completely discounted after 10 years of hard work.

I was also contacted by a Channels Staffing Specialist from Google and it was a very pleasant experience. I have read in other places this type of recruiters aim for very specific skill sets.

I'm reluctant to apply online as the application might get lost among others. I did this for a role at Nvidia which was 100% fit and never got any answer even though they had few applications.

Isn't Google full of SJWs ? Is bullying going on for real ? I'm surprised to read this.

Holy shit ! This is very similar to my situation at Intel except that there's no sexism. Just White male politics at it's best along with all the nepotism and corruption very characteristic to Intel. The result is that incompetents and inexperienced for the role are promoted and pushed up at the expense of everybody else and the project itself.

I've worked with Google in a few occasions a few years ago and I always looked up to them for the solid engineering culture. Is this forced justice changing it or just producing some collateral damage like yourself ? These things can spoil the culture of a company and bring down motivation.

Do you think downleveling might be also a result of not having system design interview? So basically recruiter set you for downleveling right away...

People have been saying here that Google downlevels everyone by default unless you have other competitive offers. Did you have any ?

And where's that feminist paradise you came from, if I may ask ? The pay gap is pretty much a world wide problem.

Did you get a system design round in the interview?

Yes, and it was typical design Instagram kind of bs. Nothing to do with my prior work

Is there an option to not get it?

That's pretty fucked up. How did you know how to answer that question ?

You don’t need to “know the answer” in design interviews. It’s more about thought process, to not look like complete idiot i just read bunch of books and blogs about distributed system design
