Google team matching hell

I've been stuck in Google team matching for over 2 months and no end is in sight. I have had 5 calls and 4 of those were cancelled the same day due to the position filling up. 1 went well, but apparently they already had someone lined up that accepted the position. Any ideas what is going on here? I'm about to call it quits and sign with a different company. The recruiter just said that they don't have headcount atm.

3YOE 220TC Google Seattle L4
Other FAANG offers on the table.
Already passed HC.

They should stop conducting interviews if they can't match people even after 2 months. It's ridiculous to waste someone's time and your own money. Something is seriously broken with Google's hiring system, especially in Seattle area. Looks like they aren't expanding in Seattle or possibly reducing footprint?

Did u ask the recruiter why this is happening and what do they expect u to do, wait indefinitely?

The building at SLU is understandable but why not let the candidates sign the offer and then wait until August or whenever the building finishes. I think most candidates might be okay with that. Team matching is pretty frustrating, especially when most people say it's the teams trying to sell themselves to you. Definitely didn't feel that way.

They just said headcount estimations are not exact...they are always vague.

That's ridiculous. How long do u think others wud wait? Apple and Amazon sometimes give a deadline. Did u interview with Google first?

    • Too many SDEs. Software engineers are dime a dozen now.

Google team match and HC is not meant for the hiring at scale. It was excellent when Google was less than 20K people.

Look at the way Amazon, Microsoft, Expedia hires using hiring event. Facebook does it differently by putting up with 7 day boot camp. Most large scale companies hire rotational engineers, after 2 to 4 rotations, new hires are absorbed by the teams.

I started team matching today for L4 in NY. Recruiter said the pipeline was very "healthy" aka there's a gluttony of people trying to team match atm

Curious how did you do in your interviews? I think having a stronger interview performance helps

I did well. The recruiter basically told me I would pass HC before she submitted me...she made it seem like the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. I also have competiting FAANG offers, but that doesn't seem to budge Google at all.

I see, I had 3 positive 1 neutral feedback. I'm not holding out hope for Google at this point. headcount squeeze is real

I had 4 positive and 1 lean no-hire and had issues team matching as well. Was told the pipeline was full during that time too. Would suggest reaching out to contacts at Google if you have any and getting in touch with their managers.

For L4, you should be able to get at least $260K from Google

All in Seattle? After two months, I would take a hard look at alternatives, maybe try again after a couple of years for L5?

Same situation. 3 weeks, 2 calls. One went really well, and the HM set me up with team member calls after. Those went well too. HM went to get signoff from his manager, and he was told to consider new grads instead.

3 yoe L4 is fine I think. It depends on your experience and interview perf. To managers, the experience matters.

That’s annoying, I’m just about to start team matching and hopefully the same doesn’t happen to me. My recruiter told me since it’s the end of Q2, the team matching process can move at a glacial speed since many teams don’t know what their head count will be yet
    🧐
I wish they had industry hires apply directly to teams

Overall low L3/L4 headcounts in Seattle. There are more open headcounts in the Bay Area, NYC, and Austin. Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Boulder offices are not going to expand at this year. I talked to recruiter yesterday.

Can anyone from Google provide insights? I have also been in team matching for quite some time now.

same issue here though on the design side - had my on-site 5 weeks ago and still waiting for team matching. Its becoming painfully slow and I believe Google is well aware their recruiting process isn't efficient (my friend told me it was revised already not long ago).
