Google team question

Just passed HC as a SWE, and currently team matching. I’m always interested in building infrastructure software, wondering which team(s) are usually in charge of building applications like bigTable/Spanner/Chubby, etc.

I work on one of those teams and can confirm very little college hiring. Best bet is probably to find a backend team, do well there, and transfer in a year or two.

Still, doesn't hurt to ask the recruiter.

This. Don’t get too picky as L3. Just get a good manager and ok team. 2-3 years later transfer where you want.

Thanks for the advice, wondering how do you know a manager is good without having ever worked with him/her.

You cannot always be 100% sure, how long has he been at G and how long as manger are probably decent indicators. Also in your fit call, try to guess his leves of interest in you and passion. The best way is someone inside. Ask on blind and be as anon as possible.

What level is Google hiring you at? Most of these teams hire L4+ only.

It might be hard then to get hiring managers to look at your packet for these teams, but you can (and probably should) always ask your recruiter.

Here's the thing with team matching, you'll be matched with teams that your recruiter has the best relationship with. You'll really need to push to find roles and outside job postings for exactly what you want and tell your recruiter.

So many candidates get pushed around and into roles they aren't perfectly suited for because the recruiter wants to close your packet and move on.

Do people fail at the team matching stage often?

No. It is rare but can happen. That is why in many cases team matching is before HC.

That response makes no sense. If failing to match to a team is rare, then why expend the effort at all if the HC is going to reject at least 2/3 of the applicants?
