Why would someone join Google instead of Facebook as a new grad, given that fb has faster growth, much more flexible team selection and team change, better campus and food and they also seem to offer a slightly higher TC(due to prorated refreshers and fb sign on being paid now). The only things going for Google is better WLB and a better reputation in the media and maybe a more stable stock (it has dropped 20% too though) Debating between these two and wanted to see if I was missing out anything in favour of Google and making a bad decision. Thanks! E3 offer Google TC - 165 FB TC - 164 Sign on 65 for both
No TC, no offer breakdowns, and highly opinionated post. GTFO
Well, you are missing out on a lot of things. Let's start with better products.
Yeah I agree but given that as an individual you are just working on a specific team, I don't see how this would affect me in day to day life
Better work life balance and also you grow as you learn at google, not by writing shitty code.
Can you elaborate on that, I talked to a few fb engineers at some recruiting events and they seem to suggest that at fb you will be handling a lot more things hence learning more and shipping out more also leading to faster growth. While Google can be slow in that respect
And that's exactly what leads to lower code quality at facebook.
Google has heated toilet seats with heated water jets. Aka better campus.
The big issue with FB is it's dependency on Ads business. Google, or Alphabet, is very diversified with multiple revenue streams (Software, hardware, venture capital, and soon Waymo service, etc). Some value WLB and long term thinking. Impact at Google takes time but you learn better coding practices. At FB, they move faster and people have had to deal with lower code base quality because they focus on shipping things and not necessarily good code quality. You will learn how to build things fast and if you value that, go to Facebook! As a new grad, I suggest Google is valuable in short term (2 to 3 years) and then you can move around FB, Airbnb, etc.
But most of its revenue still comes from Ads?
Yes but at least they are well on their way diversifying their revenue streams
Your offers suggest Google has slightly better TC, not FB.
FB has refreshers after first year Google does not, plus sign on paid now instead of on joining. Plus faster promo too. It would be safe to say imo that fb will pay more I guess
If you join now, Google gives refreshers in Dec 2019. That's after the first year, unless I am misunderstanding your response. I'd venture promotions are on similar time frames based on initial leveling and skillset.
If you do happen to favor FB, your bonus can go upto 75k... possibly even 100k if you play your cards right.
Got it upto 75, they refused to go to 100 though :(
Goog for sure
