Google vs Facebook new grad

Why would someone join Google instead of Facebook as a new grad, given that fb has faster growth, much more flexible team selection and team change, better campus and food and they also seem to offer a slightly higher TC(due to prorated refreshers and fb sign on being paid now).

The only things going for Google is better WLB and a better reputation in the media and maybe a more stable stock (it has dropped 20% too though)

Debating between these two and wanted to see if I was missing out anything in favour of Google and making a bad decision.
Thanks!

Let's assume that's not a priority for me. Google seems just as evil and is lucky of not being scapegoated by the media too

Nah. That's not how it works. Google has too much activism internally which preempts most of these things but many people, including me, hate that and would rather have a culture like FB where you can just put your head down and work

ovBk62 oh really I have seen the exact same sentiment in the Facebook room in Blind. So these companies are not different in that respect

Yep ovBk62-if only you knew. The bullshit internal activism has infiltrated Facebook as well. So many of us want to put our heads down and just work, but the small 20% minority who love to constantly complain and talk about politics and whatnot, takes over the internal company-wide forums at FB.

Better work life balance and also you grow as you learn at google, not by writing shitty code.

Can you elaborate on that, I talked to a few fb engineers at some recruiting events and they seem to suggest that at fb you will be handling a lot more things hence learning more and shipping out more also leading to faster growth.
While Google can be slow in that respect

And that's exactly what leads to lower code quality at facebook.

Okay, I see factoring refreshers. But to be fully practical, all of that team changing stuff isn't going to matter during your first year assuming you stay on your initial team for that long. So really, it matters most what team you'd be placed on if you accepted either offer. Something to note when comparing F/G: as much as people would like to clearly separate them into a winner and loser, it seriously depends on the kind of experience you'll get when you arrive, and that comes down to not only the project you're working on but the specific engineers you'll be working with on the day-to-day.

@kudabobb I totally agree, the Google team seems really interesting to me based on the 30min phone call but the idea of bootcamp and getting to actually know a team better from the inside before joining gives me more confidence of finding a supportive team and flexibility to change if I don't like it

If you join now, Google gives refreshers in Dec 2019. That's after the first year, unless I am misunderstanding your response. I'd venture promotions are on similar time frames based on initial leveling and skillset.

The big issue with FB is it's dependency on Ads business.

Google, or Alphabet, is very diversified with multiple revenue streams (Software, hardware, venture capital, and soon Waymo service, etc).

Some value WLB and long term thinking. Impact at Google takes time but you learn better coding practices.

At FB, they move faster and people have had to deal with lower code base quality because they focus on shipping things and not necessarily good code quality. You will learn how to build things fast and if you value that, go to Facebook!

As a new grad, I suggest Google is valuable in short term (2 to 3 years) and then you can move around FB, Airbnb, etc.

Yes but at least they are well on their way diversifying their revenue streams

I agree Google is more diversified, but I am not deciding which to chose for my whole life just for the next 2 years at most and then re-evaluate. In this scenario being more diversified doesn't really affect me in any meaningful way

I don’t think FB’s dependence on ad revenue is going to cause any practical problems for OP in the next 1-5 years. It’s not like OP is joining as a VP.

  • They are both tech companies that collect data in order to sell ads. They will both look great on your resume. Pay is about the same, your life won’t be different based on a few k.

If you can compare the managers, that would be a big reason for me to choose. Where can you learn more? Which tech are you more interested in?Where can you get more experience to make your next job jump even easier?

Getting burnt out is no fun, I would put that into consideration too. If you hate your life 10k won’t make a difference for happiness.
