Interviewing sucks and takes a lot of work. So just wondering if it's worth the mental fatigue to put myself through. I am generally happy being at FB, except wlb can suffer immensely at times. This is for swe roles.
Facebook employees crave a better WLB. Google employees crave faster growth opportunities. I'd suggest you try out Google if you want a change of scenery. Even if you decide that Google isn't a place for you, you would at least have had 2 less stressful years.
Yea, except that I view stress more broadly. Wlb can be a factor related to stress, but so can your engagement with your work, your manager, your team, company culture, etc. So anyways, are you happy? If so what are some of the main reasons. And vice versa.
This is very team dependant.
OP, can you comment a little bit on FB engineering culture based on your experience? Apart from stressful wlb.
Talent level is pretty good across swes. However, imo one of the key factors contributing to poor engineering at FB is the blurry lines between production engineers (equivalent of SREs at G or devops elsewhere) and swes. In a lot of infra teams there is a mixture of both PEs and swes, and there is no boundary on who does what. Granted, we need PEs for their skillsets, but at the end of the day they are specialists who have different strengths, go through a different interview pipeline, etc., yet compete with us for the projects and don't want to be treated any differently. Ultimately the quality of the projects suffer because unlike swes, PEs don't give a shit about good design or well written code generally speaking. What I speak about may be very controversial and nobody would want to admit it openly. However, behind close doors most swes feel the same way. Again, if you're in product, you rarely have to deal with this.
Well, probably you should also consider about salary refresh bonus, seems FB did refresh annually and promotion will be even more competitive than gg?
I’m extremely happy. But coming from no name startup where just about everything is worse. I have amazing wlb but that’s team dependent
I’m super happy. Honestly, it feels like you could anything if you’re willing to try here. Been on a couple of teams and worked with people that I consider best in the industry and have learnt so many things that I would not have imagined learning by myself. (SWE, YOE 6)
Pretty fucking happy, dawg.
Yeah, life is pretty good. Most employees lost motivation about 10 years ago ("20% time for doing anything"). Since then, with the stock surge and lots of younger people providing bench strength, it must be nicer now for those older employees too. Makes it harder to leave. Someone please enlighten me if the above isn't true.
The red tape on promotions is the biggest draw back. You will need to wait it out for a chance at promotions rather than just doing your best work and trusting the company to reward you for it.
I wonder if people switch to FB with a higher level and boomerang after a year or two negotiating an even higher level. Problem solved!
Glad to see so many people happy with Google. Would recommend mid stage, fast growing startup if you’re in the early part of your career.
