Googlers complain about the use of the word “family”. WTF is wrong with Google?

This company is getting more and more shameful every day. Why do people take such offence at every little thing? Whatever happened to the notion of good intentions behind people’s words? Why is there so much thought police?

Tech companies in general are becoming more and more shameful. I left Google after a 5 year stint and I thought it would improve but it’s just getting worse and worse. At least at Facebook, people are trying to push diversity of thought now thankfully.

I’ll give it 6 more months before Google collapses on itself.

      Facebook is just as good as Google. Us lowly MSFT and Amazon employees wish we could join either of those companies.

    Working here is like walking on eggshells all the time, and I'm pretty damn liberal.

    Just buy a fucking dog/cat like the anti-natalists of old, and stop being such a repulsive person to converse with.

      I don't hear people whining about the word family directly (saw a mention on Y@G). But there's a lot of peer pressure to participate in walk outs and other protest shit. I've got kids and no time to fuck around.

      I consider many anti-Dragonfly arguments to be borderline racist. Yet if I'm publicly on the wrong side of that line, I must be a right wing incel.

    To be fair, many engineers fail at attracting partners. It is inevitable that when using words like “family,” it reminds the common incel of his pointless plight. A reminder of your plight burned upon the very product you slave to build is a high insult to his intellect

    Fake news, and guess what...came from Facebook just like we would have expected

      Facebook is a tool in that scenario, and called out for being the most popular in it's area, not the creator of the fake news.

      It is like blaming spam email on Gmail because it is the most used email. Or upset on the content a web page you found with Google search, when Google is linking to the page and not writing everything on the internet.

      Where was any mention of ‘creator’? What meds are you on?

      You said "fake news is spread via Facebook". You can similarly say spam is spread by Gmail.

      It’s a bit different because Facebook employs algorithms to get these fake news stories front and center in feeds in front people in a way that gmail doesn’t, creating echo chambers and the like.

      Gmail just follows email standards and delivers a spam email to the addresses the spammer specified.

      I will concede that spam was not the best example.

      Now that you have described what the fake news algorithm means "creating echo chambers and the like", that is clearly what happens on google search. You would be well aware of the term "filter bubbles", which is a result of giving people "relevant" results.

      This talk goes through detailed examples on how for one person searching "Egypt" gets political topics about a protest, while another sees completely different information.
      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B8ofWFx525s&t=117

      I completely agree that filter bubbles are a massive problem, and know that both Google and Facebook work on correcting the negative effects of those problems.

    I don't get why people get offended about these things and then try to force different words on others to use. In particular this scenario

    /*
     “Family friendly” used as a synonym for “kid friendly” means, to me, “you and yours don’t count as a family unless you have children”
    */

    Unless Google we're kicking people out for not bringing children, why is it interpreted as "you and yours don't count"?

    You cannot stop people from being offended. People can only control their own emotions. Being offended says more about the receiver than it does of the speaker of the words used.

    If it did in fact mean anyone without children must leave then I would agree the interpretation.

    When I read Brave New World a while back I thought it strained credibility how people were offended by monogamy and words like husband/wife. How Huxley know this would happen???
