Got Pivot less than 6 months

Joining Amazon as SDE 1, the manager who hired me left within 2 weeks after I joined, new manager came after 2 months. He said he was not satisfied with my performance when I joined around 4 month and gave me a plan with multiple tasks to improve - at that time I didn’t know it was dev list and he didn’t tell me either. Even I finished all the deliveries in that plan, he still decided to put me in Pivot or I leave voluntarily, I joined less than 6 months. I’m still waiting for the result of my H1B. Seems my manager really want to to leave, but would like to help me get the H1B.
Manager said I cannot switch team within Amazon, why is that? Any advice? Anyone has experience that got Pivot/PIP waiting for H1B?

Theyre probably trying to move people to the big building in india they recently unveiled, for cheap. This way they get back the sign on bonus too and rehire.

I don't work at Amazon but from my own experience if you are in a performance plan you can't switch teams. Best to do what you can to exceed those targets in the plan but if they are hell bent on removing you then invest your time into getting another job. Since you will have a few months at Amazon under your belt you shouldn't have too much trouble finding work elsewhere.

Well, get to it then. It shouldn't take much to get back up to speed. Just be respectful and play by the rules until you are ready to make your move. It is real easy for this manager to pick at the little things so you don't want to give them reason to

I’ll try my best, I just feel anxious and my status is not good then cannot focus not preparation for interview. Yes, I had several 1:1 with him and showed him what I did and my documents, whatever I said he can always say something else that he thought I didn’t do well.

Good luck to you. I was in the exact same situation a year ago. You will end up in a better place a year from now. This will pass

I was fcuked when my i-140 was to be filed. Had to leave and retry in new company. Always LC and interview 365 days. Work in office for 4 hours only.

Won't working for 4 hours only contribute to underperformance regardless of which company you work for ? 4 hours work a day is a pip even at msft

I actually really like this job and put a lot of efforts on it, I’m the only one SDE 1 here. You’re right, I shouldn’t have stopped practicing.

Well, I don’t want to think like it’s personal on me, I think he just wants a better person to replace me, he said this to me, well not exactly same words but this meaning.

The fact that it is not personal doesnt mean he is not a jerk. Managers optimizing for their damn metrics and personal success makes me want to slap them

Mgr change is the top most root cause of managing out. In most cases, stick with the mgr who interviewed you.

Oh dear. This was exactly my case. I was placed on dev list the 4th month after I joined and Piped the 5th month. Despite delivering all the projects on dev list in addition to my regular job and Q4 execution, I still got Piped with no genuine fault in my project. At this time my H1b result wasn’t even out yet. My manager lied and the director backed her. When I sent evidence to counter the lies to HR, they told me they will ask the director and I never got any response or resolution. I let it go and left the company just because I didn’t want a court case and I was emotionally drained dealing with toxic people who will blatantly lie to get rid of you. It was shitty. Prepare for the worse. I left with my status jeopardized and my OPT wasted in sweatshop company.

I’m kinda wondering if they sometimes hire people just to fire them for the unregretted attrition quota?

Uhh so sorry to hear your situation! Some managers and teams are, you know. They don’t care your development, anyway they can hire more people. I don’t think director would back up you if you’re just SDE1 like me to again a manager. Sweatshop company, that’s what it is.
So did you already leave? Hope all the best for you!

maybe, my team has only me as SDE1 so manager would not fire sde2 whose ability is better.

That's the main job of first line manager at Amazon, ask yourself who else can be PIP instead of you. You can workout a timeline with the manager. If they ask you to do any shitty work after that make sure to look them deep in the eye and ask why do they want to make a scene.

Sorry I just saw your post!
I don’t think there’s “who else”, since I’m the only 1 SDE1 in that team, with urgent milestones and goals, they don’t have time or patience to guide and train me, I guess.
