Level: L4
Base: $153k
Bonus: 15% ($23k)
RSU: $227k/4 years
Sign-on : none

TC: $233k

That's Google's initial. I kicked that one back immediately.

Current situation:

Company: in the Walmart family
Level: Principal (team lead)
Base: $180k
Bonus: 20% ($36k)
Stock: $15k/$30k/$45k/$60k
Sign-on: $25k

TC: $256k/$246k/$261k/$276k

Competing offers: none yet, and not sure how fast I can scare them up. Could maybe hit Uncle Mikey's place up and see if I could come back.

What say ye, Blindlandia?

Dude the perks, prestige and WLB are well worth it. Not to mention you'll get to work with top notch engineers. I would work at Google for free if I get an offer. And I say this with pending netflix offer for 380k

I countered that I wanted $400k RSUs plus at least $25k up front to cover the signing bonus I would need to repay. I would probably take it if they offered that, subject to any attempts to keep me (we are having problems hiring at the moment).

Pretty much. I got a leadership role, but the technical challenges and level of hands-on work were very oversold.

I have no RSUs. I get that much in stock each year, vesting immediately. At least, that is what I was told.

Wow - walmart beat google! Is this walmartlabs or jet.com as some one is saying. Also is your rsu grant in the offer letter? Meaning the rsus you mention are they sign in rsus or refreshers. Will u get additional refreshers. The reason is say is because they way u breakdown ut tc yoy it sounds more like refreshers

So, they came back with new numbers today:

    Base: $158k
    Bonus: 15% ($24k)
    RSU: $292k/4 years
    Sign-on: $20k

TC: $275k first year, $255k each subsequent year

My recruiter was surprised they came up so much.

I am trying to get an interview scheduled with Facebook. I also reached out to an ASAPP recruiter who contacted me a couple months ago to see what I might be able to do there.

Otherwise, I'm going to stay put and try to carve out a better position for myself where I am. I think I am better off with technical management experience than with experience as a mid-level Google engineer (16 years after I graduated).

For your case, sounds like you made the right decision. Any reason you're interviewing as an IC? Why not continue being a manager? Perhaps join FB as a manager and jump to Google from there

I interviewed as an IC because my current role is the only formal management experience I have. I should have insisted on at least an L5 interview loop; not doing so is definitely my mistake.

Just saw this, reply is a bit late. Go for EM1 at the top companies, or IC6 at a minimum. Target at least 600K per year in CA. Those offers are all low balls.

I think the problem here is Google is offering you L4, but you are a team lead at Walmart with 10+ years YOE.

That is the core of my problem. It would drop me back to being a mid-level engineer.
      Oct 29, 2018
    • That and lack of competing offers. The L4 band is pretty wide but if you don't have competing offer you will hit a brick wall with google comp committee

Are your offers 100% bonusable? In other words are you confident you can get the bonus no matter what?

Yes, both bonus percentages are the "show up and do your job" numbers. Where I am I could get as high as 35% if I really kick ass.
      Oct 26, 2018
  • Yup that is not his problem. That is Google's problem. If they can match Walmarts pay at that level then that's great
