Got rejected because of system design questions, may be because don't have much experience in distributed computing. Any tips for Google onsite next week?

Just to be realistic, if you can’t get into Amazon you probably won’t get into Google. Sorry. The best you can do is study data structures and algorithms all weekend and try your best. Maybe you’ll get lucky.

That's not true. You could've had a bad day. Or the interviewer could've asked domain specific question that they didn't mention about before the interview. Both happened to me in the past.

Thanks Agent_47. But not really confident about Google after hearing the result. May have been better for me, had the result come after Google interview I guess. Anyways, will try to look forward to the interviews.

On the plus side, you don’t have to work for Amazon, at least.

But I kind of liked the overall interview process and thought I could fit in.. but they though otherwise..

Eh I had an off day when I interviewed with amazon (a9 technically) but got an offer from google and other “top” tech companies. Failing Amazon has no bearing on how you’ll do on the google interview. Study leetcode problems, really take the time to articulate your thoughts during the interview, and try to write clear and concise code during the interview. I think that’s the key to google.

Thanks. That is very helpful. Have done leetcode questions. Will try to remember your advice about the code.

@whatdo curious did you move from one of those top companies to qualtrics or chose it over them? What influenced the decision?

@Gtfcg I am leaving qualtrics (one week left!) for one of those companies. I was interviewing in February and all I have left is to decide where I want to go next!

At SDE 3 they would expect you to do very well with system design and LP. Maybe you could read up highscalability blogs as much as possible before the google round

Yes I got that as feedback from recruiter. Will surely study more about them, but its kind of tough for me as I don't have to deal much with distributed computing or server side issues at my job. So I guess just having theoritical knowledge may be the reason of rejection.

Reading grokking system design interview might help to structure your thoughts around the overall system design then go deeper on Google specific stuff (ie MapReduce).

Thanks. Will go through grokking. Have gone through some YouTube videos for system design.

Amazon still rejects people at this time and age? Amazon rejection is so 5 years ago.

So you know that the system design questions were the problem? Amazon's processes is a bitch to get through and they never say why you aren't chosen. If you are sure that's the area, then you know what to work on.

This is what I did. Watch lot of system architecture talk from companies on youtube. Google system design interview questions to find lot of good resources. Read over and over and over again til you get it. All it takes is repeated study/practice. You can do it!
