I have been a government employee for the last 10 years. I obviously enjoyed good job security and benefits but the pay wasn't as good. I may have the opportunity to take a job at Amazon with a decent pay raise. This would be a non tech Incident management role (probably L5). Is the culture at Amazon really as bad as people say it is? I don't mind working hard and doing some longer hours but I also don't want to leave the government only to be miserable, never see my family, and possibly get fired for no reason. Did any of you face the same dilemma? How did it pan out for you? I'm assuming there are good teams as well. How do I know if my potential team is one of those? My potential team is full of former government folks. I'm hoping that would make a difference.
Unlike government jobs, you'll be expected to "perform" and go beyond what you're just told to do.
Understood. Believe it or not, I already do this for the government voluntarily.
Great! Come on over.
Were you Software Engineer in the Govt sector? Which department did you work for?
No. I am a physical scientist for DHS. I’d be doing an incident management role at Amazon.
What is incident management here? I'm curious.
Team dependent. Some teams are a complete shitshow, some are great. You can switch fairly easily if you end up in one of the former
Any info on this TC??
Sir. You need to get past the fear of getting fired and be like "fcuk it, I will find another job." Otherwise, stress will destroy your brain, sleep, happiness, health, and relationships.
So is your recommendation that I go big and take the Amazon job, realizing that I can always get another one if it doesn’t work out?
That's how I live. It's a personal choice.
