Green card

Im on L1 visa. Can anyone tel me what happens after my I-485 is approved (PD current next month)? Have already done interviews etc. Does the case just get approved, card printed and mailed? Or do I have to get this I-551 stamp I have heard about? I already have advanced parole/EAD card. Finally, this is a question I asked my lawyer and awaiting response, “what point do I actually legally become a PR? Is it once case is approved or once GC is sent to me etc”?

I would wait till your GC arrives but I believe once your GC is approved, you are already a PR.

Ideally yes but that could mean losing the house I want.

Technically you are PR from the date of approval if ur priority date is current. But you cannot prove it until u get the card in hand.

This is helpful thanks. I thought the same thing.

Thank you - yes I did interviews but my PD was not current as it was retrogression. Now PD is current for final action I can be approved

You are a permanent resident exactly when you receive your GC, not a day before. Congrats btw

@dlebsteb - this makes sense to me and was also the answer I was hoping for. Some people say their cards get lost or take another month to arrive after approval so I don’t want to have a hold up.

How do you know when priority date is current ? When did u interview?

Uber AxeKick OP Dec 26, 2018

September. You must check visa bulletin for final action date.

You’re a permanent resident the second you’re approved. You can wait on the card - I-1551 is optional unless you’re outside of America. I-1551 stamp does let you prove PR status without the card however / a lot earlier - the card takes months to arrive.

Thanks

The stamp is I-1551. And the above poster is wrong. The USCIS suggests a wait time of 30-60 days for the card to be printed and shipped to you (when approved). He’s either BSing or wrong. If it is having problems / not approved then the USCIS has up to 180 days. Source: I literally do this every day.
