How long does it take to process from a f1 student to a green card with a big tech company like google/Microsoft? If you’re not from India, China, Mexico or Philippines(sorry for pointing out, friends, I still love all of you guys)?
1.5 to 2.5 years
You need to first secure an H1B, which is draw of luck at the moment. Once you have that, it’ll take a couple of years depending on priority backlog but nothing dramatic like the exceptional countries.
You can go from OPT to green card directly
You CAN but it's risky and results in a lengthy travel restriction. I got my GC that way on a different non immigrant visa with a similar restriction. You think it's going to be easy to just stay in the US, right? No big deal? Just don't go home for a year? Right in the middle of the travel restriction with months still to go my mom got into a car accident and was in bad shape for awhile, lengthy hospital stay. I could not go to see her and didn't know if she was going to be ok. Let me tell you, it's not easy. Life can throw curve balls. (She recovered thankfully)
