Green card >> Citizenship

Many of my European friends are holding off on citizenship and are quite content with a green card. Would you delay or skip US citizenship considering the current environment?

Why would you skip it? Aren't you at risk of a bunch of issues when you're not a citizen?

Not with a green card

Greencard is ok only if your skin color is white under the Trump administration. Otherwise, gotta secure your citizenship to avoid being deported. #maga #🍊#whitesupremacistsarefinepeople

Nope. Trump will strip you of citizenship and deport you. Better to go home and make your own country great again.

It’s silly to skip it unless it has implications for you in your country of origin. The only downside of citizenship is the tax implications but that’s the same for green card holders as well. So by skipping citizenship, you get all the downside and none of the upside.

Not the same tax situation for green card holder. If you go back to your country or sale a home back in your home country, the IRS can’t get after you. As a US citizen you are required to pay capital gain tax as well as filling double tax return for life if you retire back in your home country. If you end up renouncing your US citizenship it takes 10 years to clear you out of the IRS. Big brother owns you if you become an american citizen... it’s like being handcuffed. If you don’t plan on owning any assets outside of the US and don’t mind spending extra money to pay for a foreign tax attorney to file your US tax return while living abroad, then yeah... go buy yourself the right to vote

Same applies to green card holders, look it up. In the eyes of the IRS, green card holders and citizens are the same. In the eyes of immigration though, they are different. So by skipping citizenship, you get the downside of IRS without the upside of immigration complications and legal rights of citizens.

GC holders have to deal with residency requirements so if you plan to split your time between the States and elsewhere it may get annoying.

Also, if you are coming from a country that has a less powerful passport to get into other countries, getting a U.S. citizenship means more flexibility for travelling.

2yrs into GC and Indian. Would take the citizenship cause why not. Give myself one of the most powerful passports, stability and freedom to travel. Plus I can always go back to India as Person of Indian Origin and reap benefits on both sides. If you’re European its a different thing perhaps.

My country allows dual citizenship so i have no reason to skip it. The current administration doesn’t matter in this decision.

One downside of the citizenship is jury duty. The upside that wasn’t mentioned before is:you might lose your GC if you ever bring your legalized marijuana in the state where it is not yet legal. Citizens won’t get deported.

Not eyeing US citizenship. My passport is more powerful than US and gives me more visa free entries, and my country doesn’t allow dual citizenship, which hinders my capability to invest and buy properties back home
