I am a project manager at Amazon and on H1B. I am pip’ed and will likely be fired soon. What are the options I have ? I can either look for jobs in ms, fb, IT companies etc. for a couple of months or go back to India and job hunt but not sure how the market is back there. Any suggestions will be helpful.
MBAer try to be kinder - it kinda just feels better.
What's pip?
Performance Improvement Plan - you better start delivering or you'll get the boot.
More like you already got the boot and are on borrowed time.
Heard that Amazon over hired this year so its downsizing now. We are gonna see more of these posts from amazonians now. Ping me I can refer you in G.
Thanks will ping you
I'm in a similar situation (H1-B, India, expecting a PIP in couple months). Don't waste a second to start looking for jobs. There are other options, like finding a "consultancy" that'll farm you out as a contractor, or maybe enrolling in a university for CPT/OPT. Both are a step down from Amazon, but they'll give you stop gap period to look for the right job. Let me know if you need a referral to fb.
Facebook does pip too?
@Thomash, yup, it does, if you're not at a terminal level (E5 and above).
Even after your last day you have 60 ‘grace’ days under the new h1b rules, so that should buy you enough time to switch over
Yea and hopefully hiring increases in q1 next year
Whats pip?
Performance improvement program?
Sorry about your situation. You are not getting laid-off but getting fired. There is a difference. Be careful to not say you got laid off.
Sorry to hear that bro. Invest your time interviewing/practicing, because spending your time on the PIP is wasting your time. Spend the downtime practicing for interviews! Twitter, Facebook, Google, Zillow, etc are hiring in Seattle. Sign up at “Hired”, they will get you in touch with several startups that are willing to do H-1B transfers. I believe Triplebyte also has some companies willing to do H-1B transfers. Meanwhile, also apply to companies in Canada (such as Shopify etc). If you have a job offer, you’ll likely qualify for immediate permanent residency in Canada through the government’s “express entry” program. Good luck, and remember it’s not the end of the world! You’re smart enough to find another job for sure. Enjoy a beer from me: 🍺
Thanks man for the guidance , really helpful. Cheers !!
The day you are placed on PIP is the best time to start looking! If you haven't started looking already, then right now is the next best time.
Already did, just not getting enough traction due to holidays.
