H1B abuse is Blown out of Proportion

I don’t understand why US folks are so obsessed with H1 folks taking their jobs, its rubbish. Simple Maths - 75k H1B every year, in last 20yrs thats 1.5M people on H1B (assuming no one ever went back and got a GC) US population = 320M, assuming 50% to be working adults = 160M H1B holders are just 1%. The problem is that most US working adults are not interested in studying STEM and do tech jobs. Indian/Chinese parents Motivate kids to study STEM, sponsor their education and get them in tech. Its a simple Demand-Suppy equation. US folks either work hard and get in tech and make sure there is enough supply of US engineers that companies don’t have to look out to sponsor H1 OR stop complaining

Not all 160M are qualified for the jobs that are given to H1 holders. The sunset is easily magnitudes smaller, pushing the H1 holders to a much higher percentage. 🍆

Yahoo RsEs34 Aug 29, 2018

Why would a tech company choose a community college transferred CS/liberal arts degree bootcamp ass hat that wants to fake it till he makes it, over an upstart young kid with stellar cs credentials regardless of where he/she is from. Just learn to deal with it bro! Smoke some dope and chill out! In the meantime why don't you just admit what your real fear is..2042 is coming soon, demographics are and will change in america..ain't nothing you or anyone you know going to stop it!

Apple abcxyz007 OP Aug 29, 2018

Your argument is actually logical in a reverse way. Why don’t US Govt and Mr Trump work to make thoose 160M eligibile and competitive

Oath Pooch Aug 29, 2018

The concern is not around h1b. Had it been around 75k, they would have reduced the number. The concern is around infosys, tcs etc gaming the system and blatantly gaming the system to send underpaid workers to US. It is disgusting. These companies file for h1b for every Indian employee and pay them 40k for 100k jobs. The result is shoddy job which could have been done by someone who better deserved the job.

NTT Data NWVcL82T Aug 29, 2018

Correctly explained ... nice.

Apple abcxyz007 OP Aug 29, 2018

Two counter agreements 1. Why will someone accept 40k for a 100k job it’s against the economics but If a H1 guy can do it for 40k why not a US citizen 2. There is no shoddy job, companies are getting what they pay for and they are happy with it. e.g. Google pays top $ to H1 and gets top work and TCS pays low and gets same quality of work

Facebook zuckbucks Aug 29, 2018

The argument goes that employers don't need to pay $150k to employ a citizen, they can just pay $75k to employ a H1B and force them home if they start complaining about being paid so much less

Splunk bz45678 Aug 29, 2018

I had multiple situations where we had to train our replacements and multiple companies laid off all us employee and started loading up on offshore employees and brought a few to the US on hb1 visa. It not about the numbers it about what companies have done to many people in tech to feel paranoid.

Netflix Rockstarpt Aug 29, 2018

Why you want to work for those companies anyways? Didn’t it work out for you anyways? You are now at Splunk instead of those lame places!

Splunk bz45678 Aug 29, 2018

It took me 15 years to get to Splunk. Just saying people who have lost jobs and forced to train cheaper replacement is hard to forget. I am not as much against hb1 visa anymore but in my earlier career, I was very angry. I almost lost my house because I went from one good paying job to working 2 jobs just to get close to what I was making. Sometimes you have to think about both sides and just providing the other side to answer the op question.

The call centers

Apple abcxyz007 OP Aug 29, 2018

There are tons of companies that still have call centres in US, make ur rural area competitive vs outsourcing Its like Sears complaining that Amazon got them to be bankrupt A person or a company needs to learn how to be competitive in a market

BlackRock Dafuck Aug 29, 2018

They are concerned because they don’t want to see America get brown-er !!!

Apple abcxyz007 OP Aug 29, 2018

America was browner to begin with 😂😂, so lets not go there

I don’t see any coal miner getting H1

Its ignorance of US folks to say h1b is taking their jobs. The reality is that there are no Us citizens to fill the jobs. Most of the h1b folks are paid well. If US abandons h1b, the jobs will move to places like India, China, Malaysia. The money you pay to a fresh grade in US is more than what you need to hire a tech lead with 7-8years exp in India or China. Its all about dollars 😊. On top H1b folks in US add alot to US economy i.e buying homes, cars, Shopping etc. Discarding H1b is not in favor of US tech companies and its economy.... just bullshit on part of incompetent people who have no idea of reality.

Talend rapier Aug 29, 2018

Can't have it both ways. If they make up less than 1% of the working population, even if they are in the top 10% of wage earners, they aren't going to have that huge of an economic impact. Especially if they are living frugally and sending the money back home. H1B is meaningful part of the reasons there are not enough citizens for the tech jobs (the is a significant percentage of ex-tech workers that have chosen to leave the industry because of H1B wage pressures and WLB pressures - or because they had to train their replacements and don't want to risk going through that again.

Qualcomm VPVu22 Aug 29, 2018

Exactly, i also wonder how come less than 1% of h1b is taking away all of US jobs 🤔. Seems like blaming others for your incompetences.

Microsoft zmtW00 Aug 29, 2018

Come on, we all know what is the H1B problem, this is data from 2018. The real bright students are only around 20~25k at most. The rest, any american bootcamper can do it. As much as I’m in favor of H1B, it is being HEAVILY exploited by indian consultancy. We all know that 70~80k salary in Silicon Valley is RIDICULOUS and you want to call that High Skilled Immigrants?

Apple abcxyz007 OP Aug 29, 2018

How do u know that 80k salary is Bay Area, thats avg salary. Infosys/TCS have lot of folks in cheaper places like Atlanta/Nashville/Charlotte etc Also check Google/Microsoft its 130k which is at par, also note that this is base pay. Another point very simply is that if a guy on H1 can do the job for 80k why can’t a US citizen do it for that money? Its economics

Apple abcxyz007 OP Aug 29, 2018

I also agree that there is some level of exploitation, but its small and I am totally in favour of stricter rules to weed that out but it should not happen at the expense of legit folks getting harassed

I'm in favor of H1b and I think is good for the economy but this aversion against Americans and name calling and shit is kind of bs
