Hackerrank, the best tool to hire third world engineers!

I think Hackerrank as the interviewing platform is the best marketing gimmick ever. For prescreening, candidates mostly remember solutions to the problems they've seen before (or shared by a good brother or sister from their own town or same third world country). They will mostly type solutions from their memories. We see plagiarism alerts all over the place and have to ignore them. 99%+ candidates have plagiarism alerts on their work.

For live coding, candidates mostly look up solutions on their phones while buying time with interviewers. I usually can sense it, but don't have enough evidence to call them out.

Instead of hiring the best engineers, we're hiring the best cheaters and plagiarizers from the third world. All while paying money to the people who want to turn American engineering and hiring practices into Indian engineering and hiring practices. With the red hot job market, I think candidates with honor should boycott Hackerrank, and refuse to interview if Hackerrank is used. Companies as the hiring orgs must find another way to find the next best engineers other than being lazy and paying for the Hackerrank snake oil.

What's stopping you from hiring the best engineers from the first world?

Didn't expect anyone to be "bothered". Sorry if you think you know a way to cheat the system, and are being called out on it.

What the hell is a “first world” engineer?

Do you expect people to memorize things like java api methods, etc? Because that is ridiculous.

I’m there with you on cheating- googling a leetcode/hr solution and just copying that isn’t professional. But that’s why I create my own problems, and ask them to walk through their solution.

Good third world engineers also won’t cheat, but they won’t settle for the crappy third world salary you want to offer cause they can get a first world salary either locally or remotely. So this is about the crappy engineers you get by being cheap, not about first or third world you racist

"I love and respect third worlders who are ethical and don't cheat. We all got to play fair. "
THAT is a much more reasonable tone and posture you could have espoused. But where was it all this time?
You have an important message(wrt Hackerrank misuse) and what you are saying can affect ALL of us in tech irrespective of where we are from. It is important you put it across in a way that reaches as many people as possible which is not what your OP did.

      OP
It's not my fault some people quickly got offended and started throwing names and labeling the messenger. Maybe I'm used to the current work culture, but it would be nice to consider opposing view points once in a while. That's why I knew I shouldn't respond to SJWs.

If you and some others can see the merits from my post outside of your own biases, that would make my day. Thanks for the reconciliatory message.
      Oct 19, 2018
    • Cisco LwJH30
I implore you to reconsider your tone again!
Interview season is terribly stressful, especially in tech and especially in the bay area in both sides of the hiring process. It doesnt matter how experienced/accomplished you are, you have to go through the leetcode/whiteboard grind to get in. So, with all the work we put it it is extremely unfair for people to abuse/use shortcuts and cut in line. So your point is an important one and must be made to the benefit of all engineers here. Which is all the more reason to put it across in a constructive way.
Please bring this issue up in fun-list or Socialcast if still around or with HR. Blind is festering with anti-immigrant rants and abuses and it is easy to mistake your post for one and your message WILL be lost in it.

@op I understand your frustration but am sorry you feel that way. It's easy to resolve to blaming a community but that quickly evolves into racial biases. If you consider yourself to be one of the 'best engineers', you have the moral responsibility to not have any biases against a community.

Your comments would have been more powerful if you hadn't attacked the third world / Indian community.

Hope you are able to grow from this though. :)

      OP
I'm not one of the best, but certainly not one of the worst or average. If you read between the lines of the responses, you'll see easily my points are all proven.

None of the third worlders or SJWs or the apologists said anything about I'm wrong saying they all cheat during Hackerrank. So it's evident most candidates cheat or have the incentive to cheat on Hackerrank. That means Hackerrank should be discontinued as an interviewing tool immediately. Some of those who want to steer the conversation to racial bias or what ever obviously want to help Hackerrank and their fellow countrymen especially when they know how to cheat the system.

None of the third worlders dispute the fact that they cheat and none admit that cheating is wrong. With such a low ethical bar they have, companies should pay attention and follow the ethical guidelines they have established.

I have absolutely no problems with third worlders with honor code and ethics, just with the ones that cheat and are full of it. You'll see thru them with their funky replies here.

Well this is the most absurd thing posted today so far. Jw did you go to first world University? Frats and orgs have years of test banks that first world students use. Are you suggesting they stop cheating after not learning anything during their time at school??

Do you think it's easy to come up with interviewing problems? Eventually you'll run out. That's why we require NDAs which may not be enforced.

Also there are hiring mangers purposely stick to the same problem sets and Hackerrank cause their countrymen are better at it or at cheating it than the otherwise stupid Americans would.

It is not so tough to come up with problems if you work on a lot of them every week. You need to translate your work into a set of algorithmic problems.

Cheat? Seriously? Like real coders never use stack overflow or google.. lol, boy how shallow idea you carry for the real world. Using the tools at your disposal is not cheating, it's resourcefulness. Third world countries teach you that at an early age.

      OP
Exactly my point. Hackerrank's whole business model is based in the premise that it tests engineers truly at their own merits, and candidates with first world education have something called the honors code. Third worlders ignore the exam rules and cheat, and think of it as being resourceful.

My point is every candidate should cheat while on Hackerrank to level the playing field. So Hackerrank is no longer a reliable tool to screen candidates. Companies should cancel subscriptions to this gimmick.

We have phone screen and Hackerrank, and Hackerrank is susceptible to third world cheating and cheap tricks. Same with the phone screen if you're not careful. While I usually dig deep to the candidates' qualifications, not all interviewers do that. While a phone screen is cheap, Hackerrank isn't, and it should be boycotted or abolished.
