Harassment at Apple by eng manager, what to do?

Don’t know where else to go so sharing here. Long story short, this individual was an external hire a few years ago, and since then has done nothing but continuously harass members on his team.

Everyone constantly lives in the fear of being fired or given a PIP. He blackmails members on his team to do exactly as he says and not talk back during meetings with other teams, otherwise “it will greatly impact our careers”. He micromanages everyone and holds 2 hour stand ups every day. He holds meetings till 7pm and if you can’t attend you are given extremely nasty feedback. He gives you tasks to complete which are extremely unreasonable, and even if you do put your blood sweat and tears to make it happen, you are given a negative performance review for “complaining about tasks and not doing them as you’re told”. He lies to his skip about everything and throws the team under the bus to make himself look better and blames us for his poor execution decisions.

He’s done everything from physical harassment to mental and psychological harassment every damn day. Our top notch team lead left last year (he was a top performer at Apple for over 6+ years) because he spoke up against the manager, and was then put on a PIP and fired. A pregnant team member on our team was sent to the hospital due to the hostile environment and stress, and she had to move to a different team as he put her on PIP a day before she was going to take her maternity leave. He also let go a new grad just for speaking to his skip level about the situation. He told a team member on H1B that if he doesn’t do what he is told at any time of the day or week (including weekends) his sponsorship will be revoked and he will be sent back the next day.

At this point, I am convinced Apple doesn’t give a shit about it’s employees. I know at least five people who have filed complaints against him to HR and business conduct over the years but nothing has ever happened. They just do not care.

It is just so disheartening. Shittiest place I’ve ever worked for.

Lol Apple is the shittiest work place I know off personally ...there is a reason why except for hardware where there are very less options you don’t find good software engineers in Apple as they prefer FANGM

Start looking for external jobs while collecting evidences against him. Use whatever you want with those evidences (send to skip, cc Tim, cc the whole team, cc the whole org, send to press...) when you leave.

If that is true, unite all the team member and talk to skip, file complaint to hr together. United together, don’t get divided and conquered. Be prepared to quit job.

Is he indian? Not trying to be judge-mental here, but I have seen many Indian managers being rude to their Indian sub ordinates, not sure why

What if he’s of the same race as you are? Not trying to be judge mental here, but would that change your perception about your own demographic? Be honest.

    Bad idea or...

Complaint to HR and his managers via fake email id...

Everyone in the same email thread...

Do it multiple times every week...

At least you have nothing to lose

I work at Apple, too. Let me say I absolutely believe your situation in totality. After everything I’ve been through there...I definitely believe you. This plan is feasible if you go with a gift card-paid Switzerland-based VPN service to block your IP address, sign up for an encrypted email service not tied to your personal or work email addresses, and I also recommend a Tor browser to further protect your privacy.

Yes, this behavior is rampant at Apple. HR won’t help you unless it’s some flagrant violation of Apple policy involving money or secrecy. Your best option is talking to skip level, but I am certain he won’t step in and help you out either.
I’ve been in same shoes and still report to same manager. I just stopped caring about what harm he can do. If the day comes “I’ve decided to take the severance -fuck this company and nonexistent HR”

No. It destroys good people or creates another cancer for society. We need to cut the root of cancer, not creating another cancer.

Have you ever managed people? You can’t ever get good results by negativity and threats.
      Sep 18, 2018
    • I manage over 2,000 people. While I don’t advocate the behavior I have seen others use it effectively. My point was that being pushed isn’t in itself a bad thing. Perhaps he is trying something for six months to see who can handle the stress.

Worst fucking advice I’ve ever seen here. Treating employees like this is not reasonable and is never “worth it” even if some grow despite it. Fuck that.

Just transfer to a new team or leave the company. If a manager has a pattern of being shitty to everyone under him and the company hasn’t stepped in, just leave. It’s not worth your time and energy to fight this kind of nonsense.

Lateral transfers are contingent on current manager agreeing to it.. he blocks any transfer requests using PIP
      Sep 18, 2018
    • How about a coup everybody ask for lateral transfers at the same time , he can’t put everyone on PIP at the same time

Then leave. I was serious about that suggestion. As described, there is no upside for you to staying.

Hey there. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this & that it’s affecting so many of you in such a shitty way. If HR isn’t responding to several complaints, there might be another way. This might be scary & you’d have to operate carefully and start with a few trusted folks. But you could draft a letter with a few trusted folks like the ones who have experienced the worst of this, outlining some egregious incidents but trying to keep it as short as possible. Together you can ask for real attention to this issue. Folks can sign it & a few of you could present a copy to this person’s manager & HR together so no one person can be singled out alone. You and ask for a meeting with HR & their manager with a few of you to really capture the issue. I’ve helped people do this before if you want to DM. So sorry you’re dealing with this, it sounds awful. But they have to listen to you when it’s several people together - they’ll be concerned about team disruption.

If what you are saying is true and HR route most likely not going to work, just name him here. Blind is the new HR.

Don’t post his name. You can be sued. Have conversation with your team. Prepared to leave and start submitting complaint to HR together. Show evidence of departure of employees for the past years. One time submission won’t do much. Keep submitting complaints so they have history and collection. Keep the copies of submission so if HR fires you or the manager retaliates, you can hire a lawyer together with other employees.
