Has blind surprised you at how dumb many engineers seem?
Reading some of the stuff here, I am surprised at how dumb some engineers are. I certainly feel like I am in a less intellectually superior career now having joined blind. I also noticed that the people who seem dumb often tend to be ones who say more chauvinistic stuff, more xenophobic stuff, and often tend to either lean right or express displeasure at liberals or Obama. I’m sure that information will make it seem like I have an agenda here, but I have honestly observed this pattern here. I’ve also observed this pattern outside of Blind, but I am surprised that people like that walk among us at elite engineering companies. There are intelligent conservatives out there, I work with some, that is not who I am talking about. I am not saying all conservatives are dumb, I am talking about a specific class of people, dumb people, who reveal their stupidity by speaking, many of which identify as conservative.

Lmao what? Being conservative is an outlier? Cities and technology lead to more liberal ideas. Homgeneous neighborhoods and rural areas perpetuate conservative ideas. There's no outlier here.
I’ve been wondering about this myself. Not being an engineer, the story I’ve told myself is that these are just early 20-somethings. But that doesn’t explain stupidity, only bad judgment.
People are as stupid as their ability to restrain impulses of stupidity. Blind being anonymous, we don’t show that restraint. It really brings stupid out of best of us.
Yes, it's an interesting observation. It's ok to be left or right for me if you have a logical explanation. But I'm amazed by how many people are lacking logical thinking on a level I expect from engineers.
I think I was most surprised by how easily people switched to their racist, chauvinist, close minded selves when anonymity was a factor. I had assumed some people thought this way but the sheer volume is pretty intense.
‘Cowardice’ is the word I think of when people only do such things behind anonymous identities.
A good rule of thumb I’d say is “ if you won’t say it in person, don’t post it just because you’re given anonymity”. Cowardice indeed!
It’s hard to tell because the majority of users clearly have English as a second language. Since discussions are not technical here, the posts often do sound like my uneducated relatives in rural America.
I love how people here seem to take pride in their supposed moral superiority. It’s an anonymous forum, people will troll. I heavily doubt most opinions expressed on blind are done for any reason other than to get a reaction.
How do you know who is an engineer here? Since all you need is an email address at the compnay the majority would be non engineers
Look for those that have Eng next to their company. It’s a self reporting feature.

How so? First of all you don’t know which posts I’m judging. But regardless, if I cannot evaluate someone’s intelligence based on their own statements and proposed logical assertions, then how should I do it? Standardized tests? I’m completely open minded. I’m world travelled, have lived in multiple countries l, am multi lingual, have friends from every spectrum of society, have spent time with intellectuals and the rich, and used drugs with homeless people. I’ve done it all. Not close minded, but I’m allowed to assess what I see around me.
Nope traveling and experiencing doesn’t really make you or me more open minded. We are who we are and they are who they are. I’m just a little different that I know people can have very different ideas and they can be not dumb at the same time.
