Hating H1b Visa holders

Lately, there have been a lot of hate spreading towards H1b Visa holders on Blind. Mainly because of several posts due to H1b application deadline and a few updates.

For starters, I would break H1b Visa holders to two groups.

1] H1b Visa directly with a company (Google, Apple, startups and the like). They hire because of the skill and pay really well.
2) H1b Visa filed by consulting shop (TCS, Infosys and the like). They hire mainly because of cheap wage.

What's your opinion on H1b Visa holders?

Abolish the visa. Let the Indians go home and MIGA!

India is the biggest loser in all this. Entire generation is gone - working for peanuts for another country.

It's a fact that were trying to find China. What, Indian schools teaching something different? 😂😂😂

They were after silk (from China) and spices (from what is now Indonesia).

And yeah, when they saw stone age savages with bows and arrows living in tents they completely believed they had found India.

@737max hope you paid attention to history lessons.
There is a reason why the natives of America are called Indians.
Columbus accidentally discovered America, he was actually looking for the Great land of India which was already great even before USA was born. Blame it on the Britishers who looted most of the wealth.

They believed they have found Indies, particularly East Indies, which are the islands southeast from Indochina hence the name and later renaming to West Indies. Neither of these is India.

If India stopped buying any US products and stopped using US apps, like China, we would be able to make millions in India. I say remove all H1Bs from here, let all Indians go back. India should stop buying US products, ban US apps and people will start developing copy apps in India. We will make millions.

Meanwhile US companies will lose their highest customer base. They will be forced to hire Americans at higher salary as all body shops are gone. The prices of products and services will shoot up as companies cost increases. They will lose market to foreign companies. Eventually they will have to move out of US. US economy goes down. It will take years but will happen. US then will be trying to give free green cards but nobody would want to come here, as pay will not be at par with major companies gone.

My comment seems to have been flagged.. not sure why, despite stating only a universally known historical fact. I ain't talking about the modern Israel state, rather the same place in which Jewish community claimed to live since 1000 yrs ago. The community was highly hard working, emigrated in search of opportunities, became sophisticated and consequently held the reins of commerce in many countries. The backlash during world war periods upon Jewish community, in several countries, led them regret not having a country if their own. This led to Zionism and modern Israel formation. They now realize the value of having a country of their own and do anything to protect it. That's why you can't compare India and Israel.

Wait, are you saying Indians don’t value their country as much as Israelites value theirs?

Nah! Indians never lost their land and doesn't have a near future threat either. There is a strong leadership that backs their diaspora. So, no such urge as Israelites do.

The real reason for the hate is that is people are scared of competition. They mistakenly think every job taken by an h1b was a job they could have had if not for the visa program.

There is need of increasing scrutiny on body shops and outsourcers, but the hate and current Uscis has gone well past that sadly

I am a US citizen and don't have beef on H1B visa holders. They want to get a better job and get a better wage. Who doesn't? If their home country can pay just as well they wouldn't need to come here. If they are good at what they do, and not a complete A$$hole then I could care less about their status.

Everyone here saying body shops should be not allowed H1B. These body shops are what keeping the products and services price in control. Imagine all hospitals and insurance companies and banks have to hire 3 Americans at more than double the salary that they hire 1 H1B and 5 offshore people managed by him/ her in India. Products and services price will shoot up and no one will be happy. 80% of Americans will be the first to be unable to afford things.

I am with a direct company now, which hired me because of my technical as well as leadership skills (as they say) and my given track record with them as a consultant for a year through Infosys. I have seen unskilled and skilled people with both options.. and same goes for non-h1b employees

This is not about skill, is about the correct intent of H-1B use. The vast majority of H-1B applicants are for working in consultancies and sweatshops and happens to be Indians that accept low wages and are not very skilled - flooding the system for basically the rest of the world. I'm glad you made it though, good for you, but I still don't support the path you took to come here.

  • It's funny how people react to this kind of stuff. I know so many hardworking people who come to USA as consultants and being underpaid a lot for a years with a single goal `Grean Card`. I was a witness of a story when one of my very talented collegue come to USA on H1b visa with wife and 2 kids 1 and 3 years old on TC ~50k (it was a Florida but still not much). He worked so hard to get a little promoted. With all this hard work being trully productive and proactive he gave a huge impact on business, lead a decent team (where i was a junior dev at that point of time), launched a new products and push business to next levels. And all he recieve - green card after 4 such hard working years and zero promotions. And only reason he recieve GC so fast was his PhD in CS. In a meanwhile our team had couple citizens who was a bit relaxing, know some stuff but not really tried to have any impact, being passive. They just made some cool looking resume and prepared for some tricky question on interview. They jump from one company to another with all benefits stock and rise ups.
For me it just so unfair. If you wine about loosing your job - is not becouse of immigrants. Its only about yourself. You were too lazy or passive. You were not smart enough or too slow. It all just your fault. Don't blame anyone else.

You are highlighting the reason why companies prefer to hire people with work visas: Semi slave labor; Is hard or impossible to change jobs and there is always the threat of loosing your job and having to relocate to your country of origin with all of your family, Makes you more loyal and encourages you to work double. There should be a work/life balance and engineers should be able to change jobs when they want to. Visa program needs to be modernized with correct tweaking will benefit visa holders and American workers.

The poll does not have an option for I am NOT American and NOT a H1b visa holder, but I fully support H1-b visa holders, no matter what kind. I know many "consultants" that are very skilled and hardworking and most of all, have this strong appetite to succeed. All of those make them a great candidate for new roles which makes America what it is today.

People who talk about H1B and competition and job loss of Americans etc forget what happened during California Gold Rush, People from across the world migrated here, SFO actually got civilized and populated during this time. Technology is new Gold and migration is bound to happen in one or the other way. Also, as all civilizations move ahead, masses would move around in the quest for better livelihood and lifestyle. This is the truth from time immemorial.

@yandex - exactly, all these whiny mfers rose from the dead and fussing about it . These people don't want to do the actual work but get tech lead positions in just 2 years and throw the real work on some h1b guy or some real engineers. Again this is not the case with every citizen but there are not many such American born software engineers who are true to their job.

Your statement is a non-sequitur, h1b program was designed to bring in foreigners when no qualified Americans are present, there is no question of competing. No American should have to ever compete with foreigners.

Consulting companies have maligned some of the great engineers and scientists from India.
Hating Indians on H1b is plain stupid. Look at the number of collaborator to open source technologies. Some of the brightest Indians are leading the large corporations in Silicon Valley.

There needs to be tab on consulting companies who select horrible candidates to do a job and get them on H1b at low wages to US.

Dont agree with u. H1B low wage consulting workers are very important to both US and Indian economy. If these people were not send to US it wont be possible to fill offices in Hyderabad, Bangalore. And u might say that why shud US care? That's because without this outsourced consultancies none of the products including banking and healthcare here will remain affordable to average american. Also all the US companies are earning money from all over the world. If they distributed salaries only in USA, the model wont be sustainable and soon India will come up with rules banning all US companies like what China does to give employment to the giant population. There is no other way. Its global economy, if US can sell products in India, india can see labor and that's what they are doing.

Exactly that's what's needed to scale. You cannot sustain a population of 1 billion by investing money on RnD. Jugad is the most important survival skill. Is very easy to talk about creativity and RnD when u have the privileges of food, shelter, family, education, inheritance, etc. Not true for most of India, where employment is the biggest concern.

I don’t hate the consulting shop H1B holders but dislike that the companies take advantage of the system and because it’s what we hear about it makes it more difficult for the others.

Why would anyone hate a Visa holder just because these consultancies game the system.
Corporations are known to game the system, do you hate their employees?

The fact that you think that Americans have to even compete with H1B demonstrates that the program has completely lost its original intent. This is why Americans are upset, that our government does not work for us anymore.
