Have any of the tech companies been sued yet for diversity hiring?

Federal and state law makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against an applicant or employee on the basis of race, age, color, sex, religion, or national origin.

If employers are prioritizing hiring minority races (read: only blacks and latinos; asians and indians conveniently don’t count in their definition) and females, that implicitly means they are giving preference to them and therefore discriminating against other races like asians and whites (and discriminating against males).

Isn’t that illegal?

Yeah, no. Reverse racism is a bigot's fave talking point.

To paraphrase, "when you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression."

tf? U r accusing me of bigotism? I hate ppl that whip out the race card and the bigotism cards like candy, casually accusing anyone posting anything of being one of those things.

Your original post reeks of racism and bigotry. Why does this bother you so much?

Are they prioritizing hiring these candidates above competent candidates or working on getting them on the recruiting radar for a change?

Because hiring people based on their gender, skin-color, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, etc. is wrong?

      Truth.

  • I agree with the statement. Why can't businesses be color-blind and gender-blind and hire the talent that is best for their business? Let the best win.

Further, it is not the role of a company to correct societal problems ( real or percieved ).

Trump was elected pretty much solely on a xenophobic + white nationalist platform, are you serious? Any way, there's plenty of literature on how this is still an issue. Or even the news.

That’s the BS that the media pumps out. He was elected by the rust belt by focusing on free trade agreements. Perhaps if you left the Bay Area bubble and spoke to people in the real world you would know that.

Perhaps if you stopped watching Fox News and traveled the world a bit yourself, you wouldn't be so ignorant.

  • Employer hire minorities and females because it’s good to have diversity, this allows different voices advocating for different things.

I don’t think employers prioritize minority or female hires. They state that they’re equal opportunity employer because they’re trying to look pass skin color and judge ppl by their experience.

Nope. As a hiring manager at AWS we for sure give priority to females / diversity hires. It’s not like I won’t hire the white middle aged guy but I get a lot of help to find anyone but that. For me I don’t care what sex or race, just want diversity of thought and qualified people.

Company employees with diverse technical background, not color, would be diverse. The rest is fantasy everybody is singing. Companies are not substitutes of families. They are well oiled machines to run efficiently in world. You want efficient people not colorful. If it happens to be also colorful, so be it. But hiring by color is racism by definition and has nothing to do with business or anything else rather than utopian dreams. Everybody tries to water it down with “diversification” or “oppression”.

Silicon valley’s liberal woke ideas are going to get slapped hard when the market tests companies for survival in the future.

Well said. Forcefully uping a particular group in name "balance" goes against natural selection.

Also I never understand how you can evaluate whether one is LGBTQ when hiring. What if I choose yes, go thru diversity hire, then change my orientation ?

If you tell the recruiter you are a non binary gender, you will be given priority and fast tracked for interviews. After that you can change to whatever sex U want, they won’t care. As long as they get to mark up 1 for diversity hire.

Actually, this could be the best weapon against this quota system. Everyone should select Yes. Register to some LGBT sites and gives some thumbs up to backup ur claim. Give the companies taste of their own medicine. Then only real competitive will be selected. In other words everyone claim belonging to one or other these category

Wasn't it illegal 50 years ago but happened on a daily basis against minorities? Why didn't your parents submit to a newspaper about that injustice? Oh wait

Important thing: orgs do better when they are more diverse. You have a better chance or turning your options into real money if your company does well. Having a diverse group of people benefits you.

The argument these companies might make is that they are trying to correct for subconscious bias for which a lot of data has shown to exist. They could also argue that a lack of diversity is bad / dangerous for their business. https://hbr.org/2018/07/the-other-diversity-dividend
