I'm from France and I've applied for an internship at Google in the US back in December. I've worked on my CV a lot, I have open-source projects to show for, references from my previous internship, and I got referred by a Googler. Nevertheless, I didn't even get a phone interview. Same for Microsoft and Facebook. Was I really unlucky or is that just the hard life of a foreigner?
You could try to get into an EU office and eventually try to transfer to US?
I've applied to Google Zürich and I didn't land an interview either. I think it's a highly demanded location in Europe, which might be why. I've received a "we received a staggering number of CV's this year so we couldn't reach out to everyone!" email from Google Zürich.
Hiring summer interns usually wraps up in november the year before fyi, it might be a timing issue
Ah good call, I should have applied earlier.
Its the same deal for new grads, so just keep that in mind
There are relatively few internships at Google and they are hard to get. Try applying for full-time instead.
It might be too late to apply for internships
As others have said, it's too late for internships. Interns coming in in May/June received offers in November. Also, why would a US employer pay for J-1/F-1 interns when they can get cheap US interns without the visa issues.
Also consider there are probably 10k applicants a year...good luck nezt year!!
Do Google recruiters visit your school? Is it on Google's target recruit list? If not chances of internship are low. Also yeah, you are late for this year.
I don't think that they do, very few people intern at Google (the Paris office is pretty small). Also, in France we have many small universities rather than large ones so it's uncommon (even for top schools like mine) to have university recruiters.
When will the Google wanking end?
Did you get referred to Google or were you applying through their website? If it's the latter then find someone to refer you.
I did get referred, and I've applied from the "you've been referred" email. If it matters, the Googler who referred me is working in Australia currently but I was applying to the US.
Having same issue 🍿
