You’ll have more than just your house to worry about if that happens..
NPR hosted Andrew Michael and Thomas Fuller for their report on the Hayward fault. Look em up
Serious warning. Look up how much the fault has moved around memorial stadium
It’s been getting quite active over there. Is EQ insurance even worth it with the high deductible?
Not with a high deductible I guess. The cost of rebuilding a home is $103/sqft per national association of builders. Calculate the cost of rebuilding your home and figure out if you’d rather pay for your own rebuilding. It’ll may be possible to get about $200k in a low interest loan from the government However if its liquefaction, the Bay Area homed will not be worth as much coz there’d be nothing but rubble everywhere. From an investment perspective I’d say no, it’s not worth it. You should probably write off the principal you’ve paid and walk away/relocate. But if you walk away your credit history tanks and you can’t buy a new home for a long time to come. But if there’s attachment to the home, then you should get it and just rebuild.
Thanks. My house is brand new. Thankfully not in a liquefaction zone. Hard to guess what the total damage will be for a maximum output ~7 magnitude. If I were to guess, it wouldn’t be a complete loss and tear town. Building codes are sky high today. I would imagine there would be some kind of government assistance in rebuilding if it was severe enough.
There will be no assistance. Only loans, and that’s a maybe when you consider the number of homes that could be impacted. Read up about the Napa 2014 earthquake relief.
I was in a geology class at Berkeley and one of our lab assignments was to measure how much the fault has moved along memorial stadium, and compare that to how much it should have moved. Spoiler: it hasn't moved enough in the last 90 years which means there's a lot of excess stress along the fault
How soon we can expect this will happen ? I know it is hard to predict, since it is not moved for past 90 years is it due very soon like in an year or so ?
On average we get a big one every 100-220 years. It’s been 150 since the last big one. Could be any day, or another 50+ years? Difficult to say. The swarms of small quakes is a little concerning though. I’m okay with lots of little ones, but you need thousands of 1.0 quakes to release the energy of a 5.0. So there’s less hope these small quakes are minimizing the effect of the big one. Just have a disaster plan and a disaster kit.
Swarms could mean upcoming major event too. Some of the worst earthquakes, ever, have had a pre-quake. It could also just mean that pressure is just being released hence reducing the likelihood of the big one, or at least delaying it. The reports say 70% chance in next 30 years. Most experts recommend the following: Identity safe zones in your home away from windows and shelves Emergency kit (no, not the $40 from amazon. Look at “seventy2”) Ham Radio (requires reading/training)
