Head of household for tax purposes on W4..

Hi, I have my parents living abroad and I solely support them. I'm single right now, no kids. Can I claim allowance for filing as head of household in w4 form?

I think Only if they live in USA, Mexico or Canada based on what I remember

^^ That is correct. And you need to get an ITIN for them assuming they are not US citizens with a SSN.

If you are paying for their mortgage in India then you can take mortgage interest deductions here. But the house and Home Loan has to be in your name.

I haven’t done this myself. I have only heard about it. I would suggest that you take a consultation with Sanjiv Gupta. He is a well known CPA in Bay Area who deals with all these issues on a regular basis or you can sign up for one of his seminars and ask your queries there. He has tons of info posted on his website as well.

It causes too much of a hassle and risk of IRS audit for any support reqs outside of Canada / US. Don’t do it
