Head vs Director?

Interviewing at one of these Bay Area tech startups. Is Head lower than Director? Not from this industry and unfamiliar with this title. Position says looking for 10 YOE and MBA. Thanks.

Director > Head

Lower or upper will depend on whether the Director is giving a head or receiving it.

Head is usually a self-given or position specific title, and is not part of official job titles in companies. E.g. head of marketing, head of engineering, etc. but there’s no job band and salary range exist for “head”.

Big Head > Director > Head

It’s embarrassing to call yourself ‘head’ of anything. Shows you have a fragile ego.

It’s not lower than a Senior Manager is it?

Head means the highest position in your branch within your company (e.g engineering, product, etc). It doesn’t mean VP or Director, etc. It’s just a title not an official ranking. Again, you could be head of product doesn’t mean you’re a VP or director, just means there’s no one above you in this domain within the company.

If it's coming from a Bay Area startup, it probably means just a manager :)

I’ve seen a L6 manager of 3 SDEs call himself Head of X on LinkedIn. That was so sad.

In banks every other guy equal to VP calls himself head. However in reality it means hardly anything. All they do is accounting stuff. What do heads really do hire folks, manage timesheets.hardly seen anyone laying out strategy and owning it.
