Heard Back from Google HC - Stuck in L3 Queue

Google has been one of my dream companies to work for. I have 3 YOE and I recently interviewed at Google for L4. My interviews went really great and, before passing my packet to the HC, my recruiter told me that my result was really positive and she was hopeful.

I just heard back from them that I have been approved for HC, but for L3. She said that leveling not only depends on the interview performance but also on other factors like workex, difficulty of questions and all that.

She confirmed that Google isn’t hiring for L3 anymore. New grads and returning interns are being prioritized. So, the wait for positions opening up can be a mont, 3 months and maybe longer!

She is optimistic of things working out sometime in future, as the HC approval is valid for 1 year. Meanwhile, she encouraged me to take my competing offer and, later, if I get matched at Google and I wanted to leave the new company, I can do that!

well if it makes you depressed that you're getting hired into Google not as until 3 look on the bright side, someday you'll be dead rotting in the ground

She said that I have 4 strong hires and 1 hire. But, apart from the interview performance, they also focus on work experience, industry I am coming from (finance), and the difficult level of questions I was asked! If I want to try for L4, I can come back next year or I can take L3 if and when I get it. And that’s totally fine with me. I am just apprehensive of not getting even an L3 opportunity ATM. That’s all!

I don’t want to make you feel more disappointed, but I passed HC 10 months ago and i’ve never heard back from a recruiter.

It sucks to go through it... especially that it’s one of the most difficult, draining and stressful interviews out there.

Why would they prioritize L3s for new grads over experienced L3s?

Because the new grads will be bottom of the comp band and experienced will be higher, I assume!

Nope. New grads have higher potential. Just think, you have 3 extra years of experience and still interviewed at the same level as someone with no experience.

I interviewed at L4. And they said that google isn’t giving L4 to people with less than 3 years who are coming from outside the firm (especially Finance industry).

That makes no sense. Someone could’ve easily just not gotten an interview for a variety of reasons or never bothered applying before working. Also work experience doesn’t make you better at leetcode whatsoever lol.

Ask the other offer for more time (3 months for example).

Tell the Google person that you're willing to wait a couple of months before taking the other offer, and if anything opens up she should contact you.

If you don't hear back by ~September, join the other company.

Just saying that if you do this, there will be no room for negotiation with google.

I have another FAANG offer with an approaching deadline which is anyway topping that by some margin!

If you can't move the deadline at all (whether you want to quit asap, or the other faang doesn't want to extend the deadline) then just join the other faang.
