Do shorter people need more money? There are statistics about increased height increasing salary. I have not seen this as a trend, do you see it? Are you short? How do you feel about money? Are you tall? Is there unfair discrimination based on height with salary?
“Studies” have shown this but I don’t know if anyone has looked at this in tech specifically. I am considered short by local standards and have found it straightforward to negotiate effectively and opportunities have flowed naturally. To be honest, when I hear people in tech complaining their height is holding them in back professionally I assume they are mediocre whiners until proven otherwise.
Thank you for your opinion, I think you have a great attitude.
I tend to agree with @wrxXv73V8k. If out of all the ways you could look to optimize and adapt this is what you choose to focus on, I think you could do better :)
I’ve seen the opposite trend. Short people get paid more, but mostly because they’re a lot more aggressive to pursue that.
I’ve noticed this too. The height/pay stats are for the general population, not tech. I see short people getting fat paychecks and tall folks being dumb, course those are generalizations.
Shorter males have slower career growth and need to be much better to exert the same influence as their taller counterparts. Yes entry level salaries or salaries during switch will depend on the negotiation prowess but long term salaries will show a negative correlation between height and pay. (I don’t have data but if we just had 2 buckets, <= 5’6 and > 5’6, am sure there are hardly any execs of that height). Heightism is just one of those discriminations that short people have gotten used to, and can’t speak about (because “feminists” won’t acknowledge the discrimination and will go “short man, lol”)!
Sample bias much? 🙄
Were you replying to my post? There have been studies in non-tech collaborating my claim. If you are saying that tech is different, do you have studies backing your claim that tech is different? Also people are well versed with sampling bias here. Unconscious bias, not so much!
People may be well versed with sampling bias in theory but not in practice. You’re only going to get a self selected cohort of height-challenged high earners to respond. Why? Signaling. height-challenged TC-challenged folks have no reason to reason to respond.
I am 5’5”. I have no idea what taller people get paid. My comp this year will be ~ 350k all in. If only I were taller. 😄
That’s a sick TC, would it be ~450 if you had 5 more inches?
I think there was a study done that showed that height at 15 years old strongly correlated with income as it is during the teenage years when confidence and self image are being solidified
Tall people simply need more money to buy bigger things, bigger clothes, more food, etc. It makes sense.
As 4’11” women in tech I do not feel my compensation is correlated to my height 😂
What is your comp?
You are multiple people?
