Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
Hi guys, looking for an advices or a fresh ideas. Moved to Seattle for work. New country, new language, new city, no networking, new industry ( jumped to Java software developer , 1 year of experience). Statistics: ~ 300 - 400 resumes sent, ~ 60 phone interviews, ~ 15 online assessments, ~ 5 onsite interviews, 0 offers. Question- how to find junior/mid-level position ( java sde/sdet)?
I am not an sde, but your post rubbed me the wrong way by suggesting you are ready for a mid level position. You have 1 year experience plus all of the cultural adjustments to make: you are squarely looking for entry level positions, or should be. If you are coming off as too confident in your abilities in interviews that could hurt you.
I am applying to internships, entry -level, junior- and mid-level positions in different states.
3 of my US friends said that it is ok
Numbers are good. Try to get feedback from those interviews. Some companies give honest feedback
Will try, thanks!
Try LEAP program at Microsoft
Will try, thank you!
Is that how you got into MS?
Learn the culture, practice your English (if it’s poor) and get help with your resume. Are you prepping for phone interviews? Arguably how you describe yourself in the “walk me through your resume” really sets the tone. Make sure to nail it. Practice with other people who know well. I’m happy to review your resume for high level mistakes if you’d like. I was there once too.
I visit meetups, watch news (~1 hour per day), listen podcasts and read. I was trying to describe myself with a mirror (~1 week) and was recording video with it. Sent you pm.
Build something cool, put it online. Put your on code on github. Show people something. Update your linkedin page to showcase your skillset.
I don’t think this matters as much as good interviewing skills and a resume that is worthwhile.
I was in the exact same situation 12 years ago. Moved to Seattle from a foreign country with a foreign degree. Tried hard and finally landed a contractor job with Microsoft. That became a very good entry point and my career started to build.
Try going to a boot camp or learn English in community college
I have no ~ 10k$ for boot camp and I was visiting ESL classes for 2 months (but it seems no effective for me)
Libraries have free English classes.
Try jobmatch.co - I used it to match my resume to a job description and got a call for an interview right away. Good luck!
Much more leetcode. 60 phone interviews -> 5 onsites is horrible! Look for new grad jobs, you're definitely not even close to mid-level.
Honestly I am to old for new grad jobs (30s). Companies want exactly new grads for entry positions.
It has nothing to do with age. If you are 55 with 1 year SWE experience you look for new grad SWE jobs.
