My wife is currently working in LA as Motion Graphics Designer. She has about 15 yoe and TC is about 130k. She's been trying to look for a full time job in the bay area for over a year with little to no call back. As Engineer, I am not sure how to help her. Our one guess is it can be relevant experience, because most job in bay area requires UI/UX experience, and she has little of that. Another guess is if it can be resume related? I've been pulling all my connections in the area for job referral with no luck. We are running out of ideas, and really need some help. Is there any resource or career/resume consulting service we should look into?
Tried Sony? I am sure they would need graphic designers. I can put you in touch with a recruiter there if that helps.
For ux designers you need a killer portfolio, showing the design process. I would recommend checking out portfolios of people in similar roles as she is pursuing. Networking outside your friends and families by going to meet ups and talks can also help.
Why don't both of you move back to LA? Yes you will make less but at least both of you will be employed. In fact Google might be ok with you wfh and coming in for few days a week.
Google has an office in Santa Monica.
If she's a professional and doesn't find good employment here because of the creative industries being in LA, the quality of your marriage might get affected.
Is she using c4d + Maya? Her skills should translate easily to unity. She needs to demonstrate portfolio work for vr / mobile / games if are wants solid non ui/ux roles in the Bay area. Just literally have her take old assets from a previous project and recreate it in unity... Put two or three mobile projects on her portfolio site and go after the mobile 3d space.
Learn Sketch and prototyping tools such as Principle and Flinto that create animated protos.
Dude, it’s not lack of experience. 15 years, I have no doubt she knows her stuff. But the Bay Area is a smaller marketing t for motion designers, and we have a bunch of shitty schools cranking them out every six weeks. Why would Teak design or FirstPerson hire a full time creative when they could get two graduates from Academy of Art College for the same money? Consider staying in LA. I wish we had.
If she can get the interviews but can’t get the jobs, it’s experience related. If she can’t get any interviews, you have to tweak the resume.
She can’t get any interviews so probably resume. Is there any recommended resource we can use to help revise the resume?
