I am currently working as a BIE L5 for Amazon. I am thinking of going to FB/G as data engineer/analyst because my 4 years at Amazon is up and my TC will drop. However, I am thinking of going back to school for an MBA in 2020/2021 and later get Product Manager job. As a result, I am also considering staying at Amazon and transition to PM job. TL:DR Option 1: go to FB and G, do the same thing, make more money Option 2: stay at Amazon, do new things, make less money base 95k rsu all vested Yoe 4
I am aiming for top 10 MBA school so this think it will be worth it if I can get in and have some sweet post mba job
Afaik, pm at amazon is not a great role. Only TPMs are valued and make decent $$$. I’m kinda in the same position as an l5 DE. A lot of BIEs and DEs turn into analytics managers. It might get you better comp and pm. I’m thinking either stay and get l6 or even l5 mgmt role and move as manager. Or move now to DE role at Facebook. Google DE is more like SDE and analyst is more like BA. I’m not sure about MBAs. It looks like it would be more valuable if you turn into more business oriented roles to move up the latter. If you tech oriented, experience matters more i think.
MBAs can’t guarantee you a PM role. No one can. They can guarantee a big expense and two years of lost wages. This article has some cool alternatives to getting that PM role. https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbestechcouncil/2018/05/29/do-i-need-an-mba-to-be-a-product-manager-in-tech/
What was your promo path to l5 bie?
MBA from top tier college is useful, plus very costly plus you invest 2 years. So, think it yourself. If you are able to become PM in 2 years without MBA (by switching role), then skip MBA.
There is no guarantee you will crack pm role at these FAANG companies and your salary may not be as high as it is now. So the opportunity cost is really high ... but a brand like HBS or Stanford or Wharton will open up a ton of opportunities
