Google can do better ...

A memo written by a Google employee that accuses the company of discriminating and retaliating against her for being pregnant has been seen by more than 10,000 employees at the internet giant, Motherboard has learned. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/mbmqxq/heres-the-memo-currently-going-viral-at-google

Last week, the woman posted the memo, titled "I'm Not Returning to Google After Maternity Leave, and Here is Why," to an internal company message board for expecting and new mothers. #maternity #mothers #misfortune

This happened to me at Uber as well - my perf and bonus were negatively impacted in spite of getting promoted that year - and to top it all - no one tried to help me with this when I questioned this when I came back from maternity

Also, from my experience 25% is kinda regular stretch for a goal in a big corp. Your PM asked for 25% more time for the project and 25% more resources than they needed, than team lead did the same, and then everyone up to the top, unless there was someone in the chain who desperately needed promotion and decided to squeeze everyone.

And even if bonus is not paid in completion, the performance review should reflect only the period you were there. Giving you a does not meet expectations because you were in a 6 month health/parental leave is idiotic (or it means that your expectations are unrealistic.
      Aug 8
    • Kaspersky Lab mayfair
Absolutely, and the court is gonna call it a retaliation, as in the case of a typical pregnancy manager had 9 months to review goals and to adjust them.

A mother here and given that Uber offers the same maternity and paternity breaks, I do not think it’s a question of gender. If a colleague of mine went on break and the rest of the team didn’t, they would almost certainly achieve more given more time. During perf therefore they will have more impact to share than the said colleague on leave. I do think it makes sense to evaluate a person based on the time they spent working and if you overachieved in those 6months they you get a rating and the appropriate bonus for those 6 months. Why would anyone give you 1.3 of the annual bonus for over achieving on 6 month goals?

    • Apple Okidoki
When I came back from maternity leave, my bonus was calculated using the formula: individual performance * company performance * (months worked / 12). It was prorated accordingly to the amount of time I worked that year, but my individual performance for the time I actually worked was assessed as 1.1 (exceeds expectations) and although the bonus was lower than usual it felt fair.

      @Brazuka, points 4) & 5) should read:

      4) HR scolds manager who then gets pissed off, and retaliates against person
      5) person changes to a new team, but contrary to the position she had interviewed for, is DENIED direct reports or other managerial responsibilities, ostensibly because she's a few months from leave

I’m saying she should be fired for admitting she is leaving, and still planning to take company money during the leave.

There’s no point in paying someone during temporary leave if they’re not going to come back.

There’s a difference between firing someone for taking leave, and firing someone who’s planning to take leave and then quit
      Aug 8
    • Apple Okidoki
Until she sends a formal notice she can still change her mind and bot quit. It would be hard to justify a firing event based on an informal jntent while in medical leave, let alone the possible reputation damage for the company.

Exactly, EFnk48. At an internal workshop for to-be women-leaders at a company (name withheld), while sharing some leadership 'FAQs', the Location HR Head said that any time there is a confrontation or grievance between a manager and his/ her subordinate, the manager ALMOST ALWAYS wins.

Why? Because of the power differential. It is very hard (if not practically impossible) for an individual to win against his/ her manager, as the latter usually receives the backing of the organization. So, we are eventually talking about the COMBINED legal might of the ENTIRE organization vs. that of a single individual. How many individuals can fight such an uneven battle, (and for how long)? Ellen K Pao is a good example, though she had to face a HUGE struggle before she could see some light.

Not that insightful. HR protects companies everywhere. You should really be asking if these situations are exceptional.

IMHO, they are. Tech HR may be bad. Google HR is significantly worse than other FAANG HR. Incompetent, beyond just Peter principle, and desirous of their ability to horde ill-gotten power.

It’s just one side of the story. There are plenty of women at Google who had babies and a very successful career.

A lot of Googlers feel entitled. I get there is always room for improvement, but this sense of entitlement is going too far.

All I Have to do is a little ‘activism’ and expect never to be fired for life?

What kind of shitty precedent is this?

Other than Ads which Google cracked 15 years ago, none of the Google product is making ROI. So, please stop being entitled and have actual impact before you complain about ratings and promos

      Aug 7
    • SAP bilit
Exactly, Shakt1man, just because our company is fair & has a good record, it can do no wrong? Yes, this is one side to the story, but it is also quite possible, not just at Google, but pretty much anywhere else. I sure hope that now that the 'activism' is public, there will be some investigation.

The best people to provide feedback whether this is just a case of opportunism or something genuine, would be the other 360 degree counterparts of this individual.

Hr protects the company. But if HR fails to act, it opens up complaints with EEOC and lawsuits. So yeah, my bad to think HR is supposed to handle the situation in a way that those things don't happen.
      Aug 8
    • Kaspersky Lab mayfair
Ok, as an HR I’m just wondering what do you expect HR to do. HR had “she said - she said” complain, they obviously gave a warning to manager, cause if we start firing people based on what other people said they said...
It’s like if you come to cops and say that your neighbor threatens to kill you. And your neighbor says that they never have said such a thing...

At least at Amazon, HR’s sole role is to document missteps to form a pretense to terminate you if they have to and defend the company from liability in the process.

Not all tech companies are this way, but in some companies, HR is systemically designed as a part of the corporate structure to the point of organized sociopathy.

As an HR I often see how female managers discriminate against pregnant women even harder. I can’t really put a finger on what is the reason. They often believe that pregnant women expect special treatment, and get it from male bosses, and it’s unfair.
      Aug 8
    • New ASdT78
yes, rightfully. if i made sacrifice of not having a family, and then a company has to accommodate pregnant women, whereby the team has to pick up the slack, some people will be annoyed and jealous.
      Aug 8
    • Kaspersky Lab mayfair
I wanna see people in Google who made sacrifices of not having a family. I would understand if we were talking about startup, but it’s wildly known that Google is over-staffed by 10-15% on purpose, and they have a policy to hire talent when they see talent. Also, a company has 9 months to prepare to accommodate for an absence of a pregnant woman for 3-4 months. It’s not that hard, comparing to that dude on motorcycle who got into an accident and went on long-term leave for 6 months to get his spine back.

Far too many first level managers at Google are immature brats. When I tell folks at Bell Labs about this, they are uncertain of America's future.

When I tell Google managers about Bell Labs, a place that did 3 patents a day and invented the transistor, C, and Unix, the response?

    What's Bell Labs.

Just shut the f. Up Google managers. You're just bratty children who have just the slimmest of people skills, that would do nothing for you outside the culture of abundance that is Google.

And I don't mean the employees. I really do mean some first level managers
