High Frequency Trading Jobs for Phd in Reinforcement Learning

Oct 19 11 Comments

Hi,
I recently found this gem of a website and learnt a lot about Tech stories here. Anyway, recently, someone here suggested me about exploring HFT as a career. I am currently a final year PhD working in reinforcement learning.

My question is does someone have any sage advice how to pursue HFT (how should I update CV companies to look etc.), I have mostly focused on tech so HFT is alien to me.

after my PhD I had got an offer to join Amazon Alexa as an applied scientist (tc 260k).After I had accepted the offer - but not yet joined - the same time a recruiter from (Westbourne partners) reached out to me to join Hudson River Trading. they were offering 500k and I was tempted, but I had bad experience working as an analyst at goldman (my role at goldman wasn't a trading role though, it was a strategist role) and I felt it will be unprofessional to drop out after giving my recruiter from Amazon a verbal commitment (also I reasoned that new York tax in comparison to Seattle will make the move less lucrative). anyway u may reach out to that company. or if u pm me I can give u email of the ppl who contacted me.

I don't know how much of it was bluster, because I didn't really follow up on it, I never got to the offer letter stage. But this is what I was told. I do sometimes wonder how life would have turned out had I accepted this offer

500k is on the high end but 400k+ isn’t unusual for PhD new grad

Matters some but I would say the caliber of your research is much more important

Some of the big players would be:
    - Citadel and Citadel Securities
    - Hudson River Trading
    - Jane Street
    - Two Sigma
    - Tower Research Capital
    - DE Shaw

I’m sure I’m missing a few obvious ones, but I would start with those and research what they do and what sort of roles they are looking for. PhD in RL seems like potentially a strong fit.

you should actually work with headhunters for HFT / quant firms. Unlike in Tech, for trading/quant roles, they're actually quite useful to give you an in. You can look up high frequency trading jobs on LinkedIn and you'll find a bunch of 3rd party groups posting jobs. Just reach out to them and they'll work with you for free.

Also, to add to the list: Jump Trading, PDT, Virtu, Five Rings, Old Mission, QuantLabs, Headlands Tech..there's a lot of them out there
