We all know tech companies have unspoken quotas for hiring underrepresented minorities and women, but does the same apply for LGBTQ community? They are a minority but nowhere in your application you can specify you belong to the community and unlike race and gender, it may not be apparent on site. I am just curious as the only time I saw this was on Goldman Sachs’ application where they specifically asked if you identified as LGBTQ.
“We all know” eh? Have a look around any tech workplace and see what a dumbass statement that is. They actually can’t ask that on the application. Some companies ask you to fill out a demographic survey when applying but it’s set up such that it isn’t attached to the application.
Even at Turo, which is super LGB friendly at least, there wasn't a single person there who was openly NB/GNC/Trans at the office.
Didn't you learn in middle school that correlation doesn't imply causation?
Hey! I found why you're an SDE and not on the Data side of the biz! Anyway, I know the company took very conscious steps to pave the way for a trans-accepting workplace but the point is, you can't assume a white gay dude will have the same workplace experience as a trans woman of color or w/e
It depends on the hiring team. Those are biases. If the team itself connects, associates with, is, admires, or sympathizes with LGBTQ, then yes. From a population standpoint and generational standpoint, you’d be highly likely to find that “yes,” you have a good chance and even better chance landing in a job, if the hiring team supports your personal ideologies and philosophies, and sexual community diversity.
Tim wants to know your location
If I ever asked a candidate anything related to their sexual prefs I think I’d get fired . If I ever mentioned anything about my perception of a candidates sexual prefs when reviewing their interview feedback,I think I’d get fired. I don’t know about your office, but where I work someone’s sexuality/gender has zero bearing on their ability to do the jobs we hire for. So we don’t ask about it in interviews.
All these guys posting on blind about underrepresented folks having an easy path are trolls.
I'm going to say no, it makes no difference. LGBT has no special legal status, so they can't brag about how well they're doing to lawmakers. Second, you can't tell without asking. And third, there is no benefit in asking. It would open you up for lawsuits, but there's no upside. "You did well on that coding interview... Now let me see if you're on Grindr"... Come on. No one does that
If we look at general employment data. LGBT candidates are still discriminated against in hiring, especially T candidates. Less than half the states in the U.S. prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. And, there are no protections at the federal level. There are few LGBT folks in the engineering org at most companies and even fewer in engineering management. I’ve been in tech for over 20 years and I’ve never had an LGBT person in my chain of command. Interviewing is a challenge, orientation isn’t as hidden as you might think. Does one reveal one’s orientation or not when asked questions about why one moved or is changing jobs and the reason involved a same-sex spouse or partner? Straight people don’t give it a second thought to reveal that they moved to a new town, because of a girlfriend or wife.
Sad 😔 No one should feel the need to hide who they are
Jesus Christ blind. No, we don’t “all know tech companies have unspoken quotas”. We’ve had a handful of cases where shitty recruiting orgs did have quotas, and they are the exception, and they get railed by the media for it (and hopefully suffer legal consequences). So no, there are no quotas for LGBTQ, either. And if you find your company has them? Report that shit to the NYT instead of mumbling to the zeitgeist about conspiracy theories.
I just can’t wrap my head around these people with such little compassion, and so much TC.
I mean, looking at how many bigots blind seems to have, you'll find that most LGBT+ people are not going to want to disclose that
