Highest base salary for SWE in SoCal

For personal reasons (being divorced) I am optimizing on maximizing the base salary rather than getting higher bonus/equity. (I need to pay fixed support off my base while the support on the bonus is a percentage).

In SoCal with 15 years of experience as an SWE which (tech) companies would offer me the highest base?

This is why mgtow exists. Imagine having to optimize your life on these variables

Best to do this ASAP before she has any savings. Hell, I'd move to Vietnam and teach English and try to win by attrition. Or just travel/build your own thin while making $0

Hope that she runs dry within a year or two.

      OP
Yes, if she marries my alimony payments terminate. Child support is required until the kids are 18. At 14 they can actually make a decision (that the court can respect or ignore) which parent they want to stay with. No question on that front now, they want to stay with me.

If I lose my job I still have to pay. I can go back to court to try to get it decreased though. But it is a gamble. If they see that I intentionally left my job they will still assign me an average salary as a base for support payments. If I do not pay child support they will put me in jail. If I do not pay alimony they can take my savings, 401k, etc. you name it.

I cannot just travel the world, I have joint custody (50%) on the kids. I would never ever leave them.

As someone said on this thread I can just slowly transition from an employee to a consultant or a business owner in order to have better control over my income on paper. That would ultimately force her to find a better job and stop leeching on me.

I’m sorry OP. Do you know why you have to pay child support with 50% custody? I thought 50% custody meant no child support.

Because Dissomaster (calculator used in California to determine child support) said so. More seriously, because of wage gap.

There is this screwed up requirement here that the kids should enjoy the same lifestyle at both parents. I never understood why especially at the other parent’s expense.

Yes, one of my friends also mentioned that. They pay minimal bonus, but possible to get a base over $200k.

    • From what I have seen $200k is super low for FT engineer at Netflix unless you are recent grad

Netflix doesn't hire junior. Lowest TC I have seen is still >$300k.

Citadel gives high bonus, which is not in OP’s interests.

Surprisingly salaries have been going up rapidly across the board. Many of my colleagues at startups in SoCal are getting $200+ base. Many have moved down from the Bay Area in the last year or two (and more coming!)

$200k+ at a startup? Any specific company names?

How many YOE are they coming in with? If it's more than 1-2, I suppose it's not too crazy.

      Leetcode interviews?

Move to a Google office in low COL country. You can easily live off half the salary because Google pays better and remaining amount that you will be giving is less for COL in US.

Someone I know got an offer from them with a decent base ~200K and something crazy like 2 million(!) in stocks vested over 4 years. Assuming their stock will not go down to zero it is not bad.

200k is more than decent for base :-)

Do you need to share your ESPP and 401k contributions?

I suggest you get back with her to avoid the financial pain.....or move to some Middle Eastern country that has no extradition treaty! 👍

401k balance was split, which was pretty screwed up. Splitting ongoing contributions? Hell no.

The number is not that interesting, basically half of my salary goes to her through fixed payments and cut from the bonus.
