Hiring a first time Manager

What are your thoughts on hiring a first time people manager ie the person has no prior experience managing employees . If you would take a chance with a first time manager, what would make you hire them?

    I quit a job where I was hired as a first time manager. I graduated a year ago. I have a track record of student leadership, exposed to management in business school courses, even tho I'm a designer I'm a subscriber of HBR etc. However, the company's management exposed to cross-culture working for the first time. It was a small local level Chinese company and they hired me (A Chinese only worked in American companies) and an American. There was many cultural shocks, and the management ppl are not very good at management.... I have to say if you can't fully trust the first time manager or can't give him/her support but only expect he/she can interpret higher management's will, just don't make the hire. But if you are willing to try, if I were the new hire, I'd appreciate if you would say what you are concerning and find a plan to work together.

    They may not have a management “job” but they should still have plenty of management experience or you should be sure you have the bandwidth to mentor them until they are up to speed.
