We are a well developed IT consulting firm for Splunk. We use to only hire the 10+ year types well defined backgrounds but they are harder to find and expensive. So we have migrated out salary structure to allow for a few junior and mid-tier hires Do an interview with a Security guy who wanted $120k starting out with 6 years experience. Didn't know the OSI model, networking basics, Linux directory structures or strong in Splunk. Is this typical that people lacking the basic skills but knowing certain terms want this level of a salary?
Entitlement without merit occupies many candidates' strategy.
that seems a bit high but there are a ton of companies in SF that will pay it. I have 10 years experience and I forget the complete osi model. just not something I use on a day to day basis. now, not knowing network basics or the product for which you are hiring just sounds like not a good fit for the role, but the candidate might have sme experience in other products or protocols
Curious to know what you mean by "well defined backgrounds"
I'm pretty sure you don't know derivates or high school mathematics right now because you don't use that in daily life. If the candidate is asking for such high pay, but doesn't know what it takes to get the job done, then your question is moot. On the flip side, if he doesn't know all this stuff but knows how to get the job done, then it's worth giving him some real scenarios to solve and gauge for yourself if they are worth it or not.
good point
yes. ive seen entitled individuals.
Forgetting one or two things is one.. but this candidate looks like s/he missed more than a few.
OSI model is for neteng. Why would a splunk guy need to know that? Whether that ask is high depends on the position/location/travel.
If $120k sounds high, you probably don't want to see the salaries that techs with 5 years "experience" are commanding in the Bay Area. Anyone that says we aren't in a bubble needs to have their heads examined.
Didn't know is different from forget. One might forget all those googlable knowledge but still good at what they do.
