We have one of the most suffocatingly collectivist cultures in history with the microscopic levels of self-segregation. If you're part of it you gotta manage the dozen tribal labels that describe you and the right set of personality traits, mannerisms, hobbies and trades to go with each just to stay part of it. Then you inevitably have people fail to keep up and snap one way or another. Mix that with our wonderful media running nightly features on how to commit literal terror attacks on your own community for two decades now and we have a new national sport
I feel like telling the average person that it’s on them to reach out more, to be friendlier, etc, is akin to blaming bystanders for the actions of murderers, and removing the agency and guilt of the murderers.
There is a difference between telling the average person they're to blame and telling them they can take steps to eliminate the systemic reasons that lead to this. Murderers are literal terrorists and should be treated as such, the average person can work towards eliminating the conditions for them to even exist

Collectivism does not mean centralized. It is about putting in disproportionately more effort to maintain the social system than the support an average individual gets

During the Wild West, it was a spectator sport to watch shootouts until western towns banned guns in the town. Same thing with the Romans and the coliseum. Football isn’t entertaining unless there’s big hits and high impact pass rush plays. Hockey isn’t fun unless there’s a fight. MMA is modern day gladiators. So I think the OPs position isn’t that far off. Psychopaths today are being triggered faster than before. And getting a pedestrian weapon of mass destruction is easy to get. It’s going to get worse before it gets better.
This is not new. Check historical records of cookouts held during lynchings.
I agree, and we need leaders who take a stand against it, not a president who stands by and watched as people kill in his name.
It should be bottom up as well. Any individual reading this can make an effort to reach outside their social bubble. Simply making an effort to socially interact with people you normally would not is a start to fight against this self-segregation culture
