Not ideal but not horrible either. Look up traffic stats on gmaps to get an idea for typical drive times for your particular schedule.
Worked in San Jose, lived in Hayward: it sucked. San Mateo is probably more reasonable.
I once commuted from the Altamont to MV. Stop being selfish. There’s plenty of people commuting further distances to the city.
CV is a straight shot to San Mateo bridge. There’s even the M AC transit. You have nothing to complain about.
Op is asking for a commute time not about how many ppl commute or the great Altamont pass located in Central Valley that passes filthy rural mountain house where people are dying to have a grocery store.
Less than 1 hr each way. Ppl telling 20mins or 1.5 hrs are definitely wrong. You can use waze or Google maps to calculate commute time
Wether it’s 580 or 880, on ramps a minute after 7:00am = +30min to commute.
Peak hours: 50-60 mins max. Off peak 9-2: 30 mins. Going to San Mateo comparatively takes less time than coming back. I commute on the same route regularly. East bay to foster city.
Why not live in San Mateo?
You can also look into hayward and san leandro for other cheaper options
Hayward doesn't seem like a great place though. CV seems much better. Am I wrong?
Yeah that's why cv is 200k more expensive. Sounds like you can afford cv anyways. However, I'm thinking you can find out where the best neighborhoods in hayward are and buy a house there. It is a city with more future development potential than cv. Cv seems to be stuck in a stasis in recent years with no significant change whereas hayward and sl have more development and gentrification happening. Might be because cv is still an unincorporated area so it's not a real city If you have school age kids, cv is better. But if you're not going to have school age kids in next 5-7 years, probably doesn't matter
OP are you from the area or you are out of state? You are asking questions like you know nothing. Castro Valley has good schools, search in Zillow or redfin.. Hayward doesn't. We already told you about commute time, like 45 mins. Give it a go, worry about other things (like working in SF) later. Also in life, is not all about asking, grab your car and drive yourself, visit the cities too. Better if you see by yourself.
+1, drive to work from Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, or wherever you're curious about
1.5 to 2 hour commute 1 way.
Only if strictly following 9-5 schedule.
Not 1.5-2 hours - that’s from dublin pleasanton and dub/ptown to castro valley is easy 15-20min drive with usual 60mph traffic. OP you might want to see if Hayward is option else CV won’t hurt and is a reasonable city.
