I start at FB at the beginning of September (TC 320k signing bonus 50k) and would like some advice on where to live. I grew up in Chicago but have been living in suburbia for the past 8 years and am pretty done with it. I've been on active duty in the USAF for that entire time and don't really have a good idea of what I can afford and where the good places are for single 28 year old white guy with a dog, motorcycles, and car. I'm guessing I'll have to get rid of my vehicle(s) before I get there which is ok but would be nice if I could keep at least one. Any advice on areas to look in and what kind of prices I should be looking for? I am VA loan eligible and have my funding fee waived due to disabled vet status so I can buy a house with low/no down payment but am open to renting. Currently pay $2200 for 900sqft 2br house in Hawaii. Also just want to point out that the FB shuttle map thing on the onboarding page is pretty awful and I might be too stupid to navigate it correctly but I can't really tell where the shuttles go to geographically.
No matter what how can you get rid of the choppas? No mas
Sad to see them go but there's more where they came from
Portrero hill/mission/noe valley/Castro are all solid SF hoods that are convenient to tech shuttles.
Looking in those areas now. Kind of crazy that people say SF/California are dog friendly but it really narrows down your rental hunt. There doesn't appear to be a lot of inventory either for purchase (at least in my price range)
Yeah dog friendly stuff is tough if you’re renting. You can find some okay stuff for like 800k-1m in those neighborhoods, which is guess is better than South Bay. You could also always do Oakland if you skew more hipster (fb runs shuttles from there). COL will be better but the commute is tough.
East Palo Alto going through gentrification. It may be a option to buy cheaper now. Would be close to work and office shuttle available. Plus prices may shoot up over coming years. Research the prices and how it has changed in recent yrs. Rent may be low there and it isn't far from Palo Alto downtown to hangout. One of the better downtown with decent late night hangout in south bay.
Untrue, epa will never (very very unlikely) to allow gentrification. They block it left and right.
It's happening. And for good. Those who are selling their house are getting good money to clear their debt, start new life somewhere affordable. Use money for education and lot more.
Move out the Bay Area. Especially if you’re gonna work at FB, which pays equally everywhere across the country.
I am posting because I am moving TO the bay area... Not sure how this comment is useful or helpful
And I say you move elsewhere instead. E.g. I moved to Seattle and now get effectively 30% more due to less taxes and cheaper housing, but same TC.
Get a place along 280 in between the city and HQ. Better prices, views, and space. Bring your car. Your dog will love you too.
Please bring your guns! We have fun shooting ranges here
Pretty sure you are gonna need a car in that area, just don’t know if it make sense to ship your current one or sell it and by a new one there
The DoD is moving all my crap including my vehicles for me for free so that won't be an issue
