For resumes in the general pile (that is, without a strong referral), the first major filter is taking the school, the GPA, previous companies, and (for some roles) publications, assigning each a value and a weight and coming up with a normalized score. Resumes with a score below a certain threshold get thrown out right away; others go for resume review.
