How Github destroyed my life

Oct 12 87 Comments

Yes, I am a Syrian. And yes I live in Syria. I am not gonna hide that anymore.
I am a junior software developer with only 1.5 years experience. I work hard like really really hard. I want to be a professional, and I am grinding day after day to make it, to get out Syria and get a visa and end all of this suffering.
Recently I got a job, a remote Nodejs backend developer in a company based in Berlin. Very complex system, that includes Mongodb, ES, Redis and so many other internal projects. For a junior developer, that was scary af, but I worked hard day after day to understand the system. Only after 2 weeks, I was deploying to production, I understood the importants parts of the system so quickly. People asked me questions, mentioned me on Slack to give my opinion. I was there sitting on my laptop all day, and just enjoying my time and escaping all the shit around me in this country.
Last Tuesday, I was working on an ugly bug, and it was 9 pm and still working, finally I got that sweet green light on Jenkins, so I went to Github to check if everything is correct and then suddenly I got restricted because my VPN just stopped without any reason, and Github noticed that I logged in from Syria so they restricted me for that.
My company was afraid it may affect their repos, or causing them troubles so they fired me.
It is just so unfair. Getting this job was everything I dreamed of and now I am on the edge like I lost everything.
I can't get a proper job here, no one does code review, or standups or devops, and I don't care about the money, I just want that. I don't know what to do, all what I want is to leave Syria, and start a new life where everything is normal.

Go to Canada. I’m serious. Check their immigration web site, go to section where you enter your data to apply for expedited entrance. You’ll be in Canada in less than a year with their Permananet resident status. They’re not like us. USA prioritizes chain migration and certain ethnic groups. Canada doesn’t give a fuck, it just assessed your usefulness to their economy. Your kind of Syrians are super welcome over there because they can boast that they’re accepting Syrians on humanitarian grounds while in fact they just get programmers and other skilled people in. They’re shrewd I like them

Here’s a link to express entry https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry.html yes it is called express entry. We’re fucked, we don’t give green cards to guys like you. They do, no work visa shit, straight path to citizenship, you’ll be Canadian in about 3-5 years

Life is full of set backs. Someone was posting here they have cancer, and were looking for support I think. You don’t have cancer so it can’t as bad in your situation. You’re alive, healthy and can code. Which means that you’ll be able to get yourself out of this mess.

Definitely try in Canada. They are much more immigrant friendly than US.

    • One more vote for Canada not only esier to get a visa compared to USA, but also you will have excellent quality of life. A no worries about health or children education should they come at some point.

You won't know if you don't try. Besides, if you were able to wrestle with that other codebase and pump out stuff in two weeks then that probably says a thing or two about what you're capable of.

These companies need people like you with fire in their belly. In my personal opinion, that's the single most important qualification I look for when hiring. You seem to be technically adept as well. Looking forward to your resume.

As a side note, make sure to use a kill switch with your VPN in the future. That way if your VPN fails, all internet traffic stops from your computer.

Oh ya, it’s Trump’s fault? It’s not the utter shit show he inherited from Obama?

We can also say that Obama is entirely to blame for Iraq and Afghanistan, right? It’s not that he inherited Bush’s garbage. 🤡

Even with that EO, Syrian immigrants have arrived in the US in both late 2017, and 2018.

Additionally the US has restrictions against businesses operating in a number of countries known to be terrorist hotbeds. Surely you’d blame every previous president that has re-enacted those orders for the failures of those that are innocent in those countries, ya?

  • I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. I'd recommend that you apply for jobs outside of Syria and hope you get picked for an interview and visa.

You should treat this job hunting process like a job itself - dedicate 8 hours a day to it. To keep your skills up, consider contributing to open source, maybe a humanitarian project (they'll need more skills in line with what you've been doing.)

I can help you to get a summer internship in IITs in India. I would recommend get out of Syria as soon as possible & get education, that’s the easiest way to get into any country apply for masters in US/Europe or rest of the world. Getting job is slightly tricky.

Try to immigrate to Eastern Europe. It's not far and there is a huge demand for tech people. I heard that Dubai has good tech opportunities too. Even if you find a job as a waiter or something just to get out of there then you'll connect with locals and find something better.

It's important to get yourself out of bed and start reaching out in all directions at the same time. Something's gotta work. Don't try to do it one by one cause it will take too long and it will demotivate you.

If you can't get on Github anymore put your stuff on a stick to carry with you when you'll get to an interview.

In the meantime hang around here, enjoy a troll, have a laugh and keep us posted. At the very least you'll get emotional support.

Too much Marx reading lately? What any of this has to do with colonialism? It’s dumb that we’re involved in this conflict but in this case we didn’t start it, we just allowed ourselves to get dragged into it. Our president now is trying to disengage and you see how much resistance he gets.
