What would it take for google to overtake the behemoths AWS and Azure in say 5-10 years in the cloud wars? I myself am skeptical, but believe in Google overall and would love to hear from those who are GCP believers.
Get several big customers by heavy discounting. Hire better sales people. Dont worry about margin in the short term. Entice customers with access to your data and AI.
Heavy discounting doesn’t work. This is exactly how Microsoft lost to Apple. The only way is to innovate.
When I say heavy discounting, it was meant for those big visible customers that will bring momentum to your side.
How do you propose price increases after getting a customer hooked? Is that normal in cloud? Couldn’t they just switch over to AWS or Azure?
Actually, I never tried Azure - but I feel Google Cloud to be easier to use than AWS. I need GPUs / CUDA, and I like that on GCE I can attach selected GPUs to any instance.
-GCP isn't significantly cheaper than AWS -It doesn't have the edge in non-niche features -It doesn't have the great network for support and training AWS has built -And people don't like building their architecture around Google because Google has a history of killing services with no warning. If Google addresses any 2 of the above 4 and aggressively pursues a half dozen hip/marketable clients, then they might be able to level the playing field
I think it would be pretty hard. Azure is being very aggressive with bring new features quickly and it helps they have years of OS and networking expertise. They are finally catching up to AWS. I work as in DevOps and I don’t hear anyone talking seriously about google cloud but hey stranger things have happened
Agree completely. Plus, MS had the benefit of a strong community of .NET developers at big companies who were ready to start building things on Azure once it was mature. Google doesn't really have a similar community.
You are all wrong the main problem with GCP is focus. Google has no focus. GCP is just yet another product. My feeling is that google entered cloud just how Microsoft entered search. Like my competitor is doing something so I will do the same thing. You cannot win with a monkey see monkey do attitude.
Google’s search backend and services infrastructure was built from a first principles approach and not a monkey see attitude. In many ways Google should have been first to the Cloud Services market, not AWS. Credit to AWS. I think they were late because they wasted many valuable years chasing FB/Social. There will be some copycat behavior in the name of feature parity. But what do you see that shows they’re only copying AWS and not following their own product strategy? Microsoft struggled to build services because they were a device + OS company last decade.
Google has kind of become a copycat company in the last while. While their oldskool products are starting to be very refined, I don't see many new products coming from them which aren't a copy.
GCP to Get acquired by Microsoft. The combined entity might dislodge AWS and get to your objective of being #1
I'd love to see a Microsoft Google partnership. However Google's leadership is too cocky to do that
Google needs to beat AWS. Azure is going after enterprise where they will kill it.
Here’s how, I don’t know much about azure though. 1. AWS continues what it’s doing (it worked so far, how could it not work in future attitude). That will be strategic mistake, sometimes zero to one approach will fail to take it from 1 to N. 2. Google cloud AI really starts being the differentiator. 3. Google cloudifies few more assets it already has mastered.

Are you a GCP PM? :)
That would be clever, but I am very far from GCP.
Very far meaning you are not and would like to?
