Think it would be interesting to hear how people comment on my company here. We are a well-known name in the gaming industry (most mobile and VR/AR games made with Unity). And recruiters may tell you that we are pre-IPO. Any thoughts or anything to ask?
You are not the first one from whom I heard so. But think about how routinely recruiters’ work is. e.g. if recruiter calls you to rescind a job offer, it is not the recruiter who made this crappy decision.
What technologies would an engineer typically work on? I assume stuff like C++. Is there a place for JavaScript / java engineers there?
I know this is hard to predict buy how close do you think we are go IPO?
If there is a sign, there should be more media coverage as the company can easily get exposure, with the prospect of VR/AR and game AI.
For someone who is not that much into gaming, which are some of the most famous games/products powered by unity?
Well, I am not here to promote this company (not the style of Blind lol), but want to see and discuss some really interesting stuff. Well, it appeals to many people that it is a strong game engine but that team is totally in Europe
That’s not true. West Coast has large core engine presence(VR/AR, graphics, input, scripting)
Which areas do you see product improvement?
Lots of areas lol. If I can’t say, I won’t be a qualified PM. But I know better about the product development in San Francisco (no game engine team but lots of infra/data), I am not a game developer myself and can only get a peek view how core game engine works. Other teams are supposed to work around game engine and the ecosystem is hopefully in the works.
My dude, if you don’t know about the core engine, you should not be talking about it. There are core engine in SF
Does the company only invest in the engine or looking to vertically integrate/acquire end products? Do you see platform opportunities?
The company is investing in many areas around game engine: gaming ads/analytics and AI, which we hope to have fruits and it will eventually turn into revenue. These days advertising is not easy so we also put much marketing efforts on our (small) machine learning team while they have ML agent (open source to game developers). As for platform, not quite sure but the company has a tradition of releasing portable software products (like game engine) and ads/analytics are just add-on. For acquisition, you can google yourself. Mostly small fish and we integrate their products (probably better than acquihire).
Really wanted to work there but the ex private Equity leadership seems to give out minuscule options. I think they would have had to grow 10x for me to make 1mm. Coming from a FAANG that was not going to work. Cash was reasonable but not NFLX sort of comp.
Tips for upcoming PM interview please? What teams work in SF? What specific skills do they look for(other than the usual PM stuff) ? Do you need game dev experience?
Ha, zapato knows much better than me and I don’t dare to say now. Maybe I can only say you don’t “need” game dev experience since I didn’t have. But zapato may use this to conclude that I am actually not qualified ;-(
This is for a PM role and not Engg. Aren’t you a PM?
Dude, PM interview is not that standard as engineers (even for engineers, it varies a lot for Unity). So it all depends on what people you interview/work with.
How did you assume my gender?

I’ve heard only good/interesting stories about the technology and work there. Sounds like an awesome place to be
Thank you for the compliment. I admit that the outlook has been good.
