Currently in the bay area and don't see myself staying here too long. If I do consider moving I'm thinking New York but was wondering how the quality of life/opportunities for devs are in New York?
not sure if you're familiar with the bay but I hear it's on par for apartment cost and daily cost of living but would you say the lower pay be comparable once bringing in cost of living ?
Quality of life depends on what you like. Nyc has a much better late night going out scene, it's just bigger, denser, and there is more going on in all aspects of social life. Bay Area is more laid back and has better weather. If you are single the dating is better for males out here as there are much more available women. (I guess the reverse could be true if you are a woman) I work in the uber office here. It's pretty good, work life balance is nice and the eng teams are strong. you should consider adding it to your list of places to apply to if you are serious about moving out here. Facebook and google are good too. Stay away from fintech places like hedge funds and investment banks, they are bad for career growth as a decoy and will rarely treat you as well. You will be a less competitive applicant for dev jobs at tech companies in the future if you go there.
There is also more around the area. trains run better. More flights to Europe, far fewer earthquakes but there is snow.
Not much snow this year!
SF feels like a small town in comparison to even Brooklyn. Stay out of Manhattan if you can. Live in Queens.
AdTech, Martech, media
Agree with staying out of Manhattan. Find a place in queens and you'll be fine. Also, there is flexibility towards working remote. Stay away from living in jersey, the trains are a nightmare, imo.

Amazing opportunities. Specially for people with > 2 years experience. But the kind of companies operating here will be a little different. They are very focused on stuff like ads, media, fashion, publishing, finance, etc. Also a lot of AI companies in the afore mentioned categories. Unlike Bay Area, you won't see companies that are into drones, self driving cars, making the next cool app, a snazzy computer vision application to change how to interact with machines, etc. Also, lots of hedge funds and investment banks. A lot of these shops are rewriting large parts of their code base and moving to functional programming. So if you like Scala and Haskell, you'll have tremendous opportunities here. Google, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, Palantir, LinkedIn, Amazon all have a large presence here. Microsoft doesn't. And, the pay won't be as high as Bay Area. So you'll have to factor that in.
Second this. The pay can be as high or higher than Bay area if you work in finance and adtech.
