"Management consulting" can mean a lot of things - I started off providing cyber security consulting to managers and was eventually promoted to management consulting for cyber security programs. It boils down to this- get really really good at delivering the capability that you provide, and strive to see the bigger picture of how you, your team, and your capability fit into the client's business. Network in your company and don't piss anyone off who could help you. Management consulting is ultimately about how to provide your capability better, so in your case, understand what best practices means, and understand the WHY behind most companies never hitting that level of perfect. As a management consultant, your job is to most effectively advise about to how to get an organization as close to better as possible as quickly as possible. You need to think at the C level - sp we want software to fix this process, are we building or buying, internal or external team, wheres the money coming from, what are the pros and cons of build versus buy, who loses their job post installation, etc.
This is the best answer I’ve received thus far for that question. Thank you for being candid, very much appreciated!
