How am I supposed to respond to this? I'm honestly looking for advice, as people whose opinions I value seem to hold some very different standards than myself. Not that there couldn't be several companies to fit this conundrum, but this specific statement was for Uber. I welcome opinions from FB, Juul, Palantir, etc.. tc: 112k yoe: 5
Context: I have several offers pending, but only Uber is a certain "yes" so far. Asshole CEO, female harassment, poor treatment of drivers? I can't think of anything else, but by my opinion is that Uber's been up front and has been making positive changes for years... Is there something I'm missing?
Uber isn’t evil. It’s more neutral. Facebook is evil.
Is that even still going on?
Try working for the evil Amazon- we are destroying the environment one shipment at a time
"But I don't work for Facebook"
So, you just change the subject and talk about a different company.
I think they’re just highlighting the humorous irony of people’s opinions that “[My Company] X can be defended, but company Y is definitely evil though.” 🙂
Uber saves a lot of lives from drunk driving and gives disabled and elderly a way to get around. Hardly an evil mission
it also doesn't give its partners (or whatever it calls its drivers) enough TC
Before Uber, there were taxis!! Uber didn’t invent anything.
If you can't get behind a companies mission, don't join it. You need to be able to be fully invested in it. It's not just a job, it's your quality of life. At Juul we get TONS of people who say we're evil. If you ask the smokers, they'll tell you we're saving their lives and they thank us. We live to help them, and it helps us tune out the noise of the non-users who are generally very poorly informed. At Facebook, the mantra is connecting the world. If you can't look past the current issues and believe in the long term, don't join there either. You'll be criticized from the inside for not being behind the company 100% and you'll end up setting back your career as belief in the vision is critical for getting promoted.
Great response, thanks 👍
fuck JUUL
I had the same sentiment as you and vowed to never work for Uber in 2017. Then they fired the CEO and a ton of managers. And have really, really actively changed their culture. “No brilliant jerks” is a core hiring philosophy. Plus so many Diversity and Inclusion initiatives that it’s driving some current employees crazy, lol. Uber does a lot of great things, and is arguably honestly more “woke” than Lyft, but those things don’t get media attention.
Oh, and fuck Palantir. That company is evil to the core. :) Palantir folks, prove me wrong. Bring your finest Kool-Aid.
So what you’re saying is that you just made new friends at Facebook 😂
Uber - Cashing drivers’ hardwork, paying peanuts while employees becoming filthy rich FB - Stealing data and selling it, abusing it. Easy money. Everyone feels super genius while they are piece of crap. Amazon - Treats low level employees terribly and cashing out their hardwork. While tech employees are filthy rich I hate these companies for their abuse. Definitely love Google, Netflix, Apple, Microsoft etc.
So you don’t use FB/WhatsApp/Instagram, Uber/Lyft, or Amazon? I applaud you, you’re definitely holding up to your principles. And Apple’s use of Foxconn which has workers protesting and killing themselves all the time is somehow kosher. 👌
I use Blind these days more. Agree with you partially but Foxconn employees are not employees of Apple.
