How many years of experience did you have at the time? Were you an engineer to begin with? If you were, how good were you as an engineer?

12 years experience, went to school to get my masters degree while working as an IC; one class a quarter for 4 years. Right after I got the Masters degree I asked my current boss to be placed in a managers roll and was given a shot. Been there for 2.5 years now and doing well. I think the biggest and most important part is you have to ask for it if you want it and present a compelling argument as to why you are a great choice.
