Does anyone have tips on getting to more important projects? I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of projects, but don’t see them as actually benefiting the org.
Where do you work
Bring it up with your manager but phrase it as you don’t feel like you’re being challenged and the problems in X project excite you. Unfortunately tho managers can’t always snap their fingers to get you what you want. Kick ass in your current project and then you’ll get choices.
Sometimes the opportunity is to identify that project that will benefit the org . Identify a problem that is worth fixing , that will bring meaningful benefit to the org or your customers or both ! It demonstrate autonomy , ownership and ability to get it over the line . Also demonstrates to your manager and their peers that you are more than capable to run bigger projects and out you on the right radar to be engaged in bigger things
Why would you want to get more work and maybe get a promotion for a measly 10% raise lol. Instead use the time to interview prep and get 100% raise in tc and then work hard in a place where it pays to work hard. Loyalty doesn’t pay my friend. Play the game of job hopping and get paid like a mfker.
Not a case of generating loyalty but building the right skills to demonstrate more autonomy and ability to own and deliver . Help with a promotion - sure , help with bigger roles elsewhere - absolutely. Job hopping isn’t itself a panacea and that kind of work history can work against people in the longer term
Hmm, my personal experience has shown me something else. Not a single company I interviewed with cared about how good or bad I was at my current job. They didn’t care about how much impact I had in my current role. All they cared about was if I could answer the coding questions. I have worked hard and delivered in my previous roles and the max tc increase I got was 15% and that too over 3 years. My recent job change netted me a 60% raise in tc and all it took was 2 months of leetcode and system design prep. So the way I see it, it pays to just do the bare minimum at your current job and change jobs every 1-2 years and get gigantic raises in tc instead of slaving away for one employer and get paid cost of living raises if any.
@Amadeus I read about several companies that have a dedicated interview round to discuss your past projects. Are you saying you didn't encounter this in your interviews?
"Can I have more work?"
just start doing it
