I am an average engineer with about zero contribution to core engineering. I am a hard worker .. hence was always able to get the work done. I have some time and I want to improve as an engineer. I started reading some of the stuff here and leetcode looked like a good start. I was totally wrong .. it’s seems to be a good way to get your thinking started but you don’t achieve anything except preparing for a JOB interview. Can someone recommend what I can do to improve myself as an engineer.
#1 GTFO of home depot
So .. getting out of Homedepot would make me a good engineer ?
Yes because you learn from peers. The average quality of peers will be better at the fangycorns compared to home Depot
Hookers and blow
Doing that .. does not help.
I’ve actually come to know this lifestyle is common among rockstar engineers and I don’t know why. It’s still somewhat shocking.
Also so busy and don't have time for foreplay. So direct blow.
What are your strengths and weaknesses in engineering? I would expect a good engineer to be able to learn anything quickly, be able to break problems that's aren't clearly defined into smaller sub-problems which are easier to solve/make clear, be able to dissect a situation with clear and meaningful questions to drive towards a solution, to be able to present multiple solutions and know their tradeoffs, etc. Leetcode does help with several of those things I just mentioned above. But nothing beats going out there and working with the best of the best :)
‘I am a hard worker .. hence was always able to get the work done.’ Sounds like you are a good engineer. Not sure what your definition of ‘core engineering’ is, but find a role/job that will set you up to do that.

It is definitely a good thing to do, but how would this help with becoming a better engineer?
What do you want to improve on? I think you may be mixing accomplishments and skills. You can improve your skills by leetcode and working with other great engineers. Accomplishments are an after affect of you solving interesting problems that have some form of impact that others or yourself deem important.
I agree with everything in the last sentence except for the word "interesting". The only thing that matters is that you are solving problems that are valuable.
I agree with zynga as well but where do I start. how do I find a problem statement ?
I'm surprised no one ever mentioned the following before: - Complete an algorithms course (you can skip the purely theoretical parts that involve proving complex theorems. What engineers need is an intuitive understanding of time and space complexity of their solutions based on well known observations.) - Internalize S.O.L.I.D. principles. - Study Design Patterns by the gang of four. For DS & Algo, you will find many courses that have posted their material online. Pick one course. For Solid principles, there is again a reference online. For design patterns, pick the book. For all three, spend time trying to observe their applications in production software or open source software. A bit of leetcode will be fine. Or topcoder 250 and 500 pointers. But these are mainly to practice fast problem solving, and not to improve an engineers impact level.
Yes I have 2 years of experience, mostly building e commerce platform here at Home Depot. I have a good understanding of DS, design pattern and basic standard algorithm. I am looking for putting my knowledge to good use. Something which is more meaningful. I will look into open source projects and see how I can contribute. Never done that. Thanks for the suggestions.
Leetcode
I did try. It seems like a good resource to prepare for interviews .. but that’s about it. Am I missing something ?
