How does marrying affect my taxes in US?

I’m on work visa here and my would-be is also on the same visa. Does marriage affect the total amount we pay in taxes? I mean is it helpful or not so helpful? Note: we both earn around the same bar.

Depends on how much u 2 make... tax rates for individuals vs couples overlap, so u could be in a situation where for 100-150 for individual u pay 22% tax, but for couples that range is 150-200. (Btw numbers r made up as i dont have time to look up actuals). So, if each made 145k filing single u each pay 22%, but if u file jointly, u end up being in higher bracket since combined jn income is higher than 200, putting i into the text bracket...

Thanks. That’s makes sense. Our combined income before taxes might exceed our single filing tax bracket.

I guess combined gives you more credit, that might offset your taxes. Better talk to CPA, they can run you multiple scenarios.

If most of your income is through regular employment, you both worked through the year and there is no giant difference between your and your future spouse income filling jointly always results in less or equal tax obligation tham filling separately. The so called "marriage tax penalty" - you pay more taxes just because you are married is rare. Anyway - when you get your W2 just do the math in an online tax calculator, but find one that takes your state into account. In community property states filling separately is pointless in 99% of the time.

Looks like 2018 brackets are better than before, but the 37% bracket ia still pretty screwed up
